Hace unos 15 años, poco después de que mi hermano y mi cuñada compraran una casa, mi hermano instaló un pequeño bar en una esquina de su sala de recreo del sótano, lo abasteció con botellas, vasos y un frasco de nueces, y lo apodó Ratty's, por el apodo de su esposa para él. El espacio no era lujoso, pero era un gran lugar para reunirse.

Cuando lo visité, los tres pasábamos horas en el Cosmos de Ratty (no lo suplico: eran los años 90), hablando de todo lo que importaba a nuestro yo de 20 y tantos, y a menudo pasando el rato y riendo durante horas con cualquier combinación de sus amigos que estuviera cerca.

Una de mis cosas favoritas para hacer es estar en el mundo sentado en un bar real, mirando al camarero y charlando con quien sea que se suba al taburete a mi lado, pero estas horas en el bar del sótano de mi hermano me hicieron darme cuenta de lo increíble que es también poder ofrecer (y experimentar) esa misma sensación de jovialidad y camaradería en casa.

Así que para mi fiesta de cumpleaños número 33, contraté a un camarero para que nos diera a mis invitados y a mí un curso intensivo de mezcla de bebidas, recluté a mis amigos para que ayudaran a abastecer mi bar y me enamoré completamente del entretenimiento, especialmente con buenas bebidas, en casa.

En los años transcurridos desde entonces, mi bar se ha transformado de ser un puñado de botellas metidas en una estantería a un bar real, y los vasos en los que sirvo a mis invitados sus bebidas han pasado de ser los básicos prescindibles de Target a vasos con más historia, más carácter y más historias.

Mi objetivo con In Our Cups es traerte vajilla vintage y clásica para tu propio bar casero (cualquiera que sea la forma que pueda tomar), y animarte a poner lo que encuentres aquí para entretener a tus amigos, familiares, vecinos y otras personas de interés con más frecuencia.

Estamos tan extrañamente conectados en estos días, con cientos de amigos en las redes sociales, pero a veces muy poco tiempo para y con las personas que realmente cavamos en la vida real.

Saquemos los buenos vasos, sirvamos algunas bebidas excelentes y cambiemos eso.

About 15 years ago, shortly after my brother and sister-in-law bought a house, my brother set up a small home bar in a corner of their basement rec room, stocked it with bottles, glasses, and a jar of nuts, and dubbed it Ratty's, from his wife's nickname for him. The space wasn't fancy, but it was a great place to gather.

When I visited, the three of us would spend hours at Ratty's sipping Cosmos (I plead no contest: it was the 90s), talking about everything that mattered to our 20-something selves, and often hanging out and laughing for hours with whichever combination of their friends happened to be around.

One of my very favorite things to do is be out in the world sitting at an actual bar, watching the bartender, and chatting with whoever happens to hop up on the stool next to me, but these hours at my brother's basement bar made me realize just how awesome it is to also be able to offer (and experience) that same sense of joviality and camaraderie at home.

So for my 33rd birthday party, I hired a bartender to give my guests and me a crash course in mixing drinks, enlisted my friends to help stock my bar, and fell completely in love with entertaining—especially with good drinks—at home.

In the years since, my bar has morphed from being a handful of bottles tucked onto a bookshelf to an actual bar, and the glasses in which I serve my guests their drinks have gone from being the expendable multi-pack basics from Target to glasses with more history, more character, and more stories.

My goal with In Our Cups is to bring you vintage and classic cocktail ware for your own home bar (whatever form that might take), and to encourage you to put what you find here to use to entertain your friends, family, neighbors, and other people of interest more often.

We're so weirdly connected these days, with hundreds of friends on social media but sometimes very little time for and with the people we really dig in real life.

Let's bring out the good glasses, pour some great drinks, and change that.
