A line created from love
Julia och Sara, hjärnorna bakom Papersaurus Creative, träffades redan 2006. De dejtade, blev kära och förlovade sig. Vid sitt bröllop 2009 (i Connecticut, det var inte lagligt i deras hemstat New York på den tiden) var de omgivna av vad de brukar kalla en "perfekt bubbla av lycka" - bestående av familj och vänner från avlägsna platser.
Efter mottagningen, när de tittade igenom korten som deras vänner och familj hade gett dem, blev de imponerade av att det inte fanns några "enkla" bröllopskort med överstrukna och ändrade pronomen (vilket de liksom hade förväntat sig, eftersom HBTQ-bröllopskort är lite svåra att hitta), och det fanns inga dubbletter av kort (vilket de också liksom hade förväntat sig). Det som slog dem var dock mängden könsneutrala kort de fick. Även om de inte tycker att det är något fel med könsneutrala kort, och de verkligen älskade det faktum att deras nära och kära gick igenom allt besväret för att hitta lämpliga kort, så fastnade en liten tankekärna i deras hjärnor. Kön är en av de viktigaste delarna av nästan alla bröllop - oavsett om det är olika kön eller samma - är chansen stor att könet på den du älskar är en stor del av varför du älskar dem.
Så under de närmaste åren uttryckte de sina tankar för slumpmässiga vänner och familj – och deras tankar började sakta förvandlas till mer konkreta idéer. De fick hela tiden höra att de borde starta en serie kort som specialiserar sig på HBTQ-livshändelser, vilket fortfarande oroväckande ignoreras av stora gratulationskortsföretag.
I november 2011 tog de vinken och startade Papersaurus Creative. Med Julias hjärna och Saras grafiska designtalanger (och tekniska talanger, för ... ja ... låt oss bara säga att teknologi och Julia inte går ihop) var de igång. Nu har de en lojal, fantastisk fanbase som fortsätter att växa och de arbetar för att täcka ännu fler områden i livet som är underrepresenterade. De har också utvidgat sitt arbete till inspirerande (och ofta roliga, för, ja, de gillar roliga saker - särskilt varandra) tryck, t-shirts, knappar, magneter och speglar.
De planerar att fortsätta skapa originella och unika kort för HBTQ-communityn och dess allierade och välkomnar alltid feedback och nya idéer. (Egentligen älskar de bara att få post på Etsy ... det blir ensamt under de kalla vintrarna i Rochester.)
Julia and Sara, the minds and hands behind Papersaurus Creative met way back in 2006. They dated, fell in love and got engaged. At their wedding in 2009 (in Connecticut, it wasn't legal in their home state of New York at the time) they were surrounded in what they like to call a "perfect bubble of happiness" - made up of family and friends from far-flung places.
After the reception, when they looked through the cards their friends and family had given them, they were impressed by the fact that there were no "straight" wedding cards with pronouns crossed out and changed (which they had kind of expected, since LGBT wedding cards are a bit hard to scrounge up), and there were no duplicate cards (which they had also kind of expected). What struck them though, was the amount of gender neutral cards they got. Now, while they don't think there's anything wrong with gender neutral cards, and they absolutely loved the fact that their loved ones went through all the trouble to find appropriate cards - a little kernel of thought got lodged in their brains. Gender is one of the most important parts of most any wedding - whether it's different genders or the same - chances are, the gender of who you love is a big part of why you love them.
So over the next couple of years, they voiced their thoughts to random friends and family - and their thoughts slowly began to morph into more concrete ideas. They kept getting told that they should start a line of cards specializing in LGBT life events that are still alarmingly ignored by major greeting card companies.
In November of 2011, they took the hint and started Papersaurus Creative. With Julia's brains and Sara's graphic design talents (and tech talents, because ... well... let's just say technology and Julia don't mix) they were off and running. Now they have a loyal, awesome fan base that is continuing to grow and they are working to cover even more areas of life that are under-represented. They have also branched out into inspirational (and often funny, because, well, they like funny things - especially each other) prints, t-shirts, buttons, magnets and mirrors.
They plan to continue creating original and unique cards for the LGBT community and its allies and always welcome feedback and new ideas. (Really, they just love getting mail on Etsy ... it gets lonely in the cold Rochester winters.)
