MI HISTORIA EN 400 PALABRAS O MENOS: Nací marimacho... incluso a mí me sorprende estar en el negocio de la joyería. O sea, hasta los 6 años, tenía un corte de pelo en forma de hongo parecido al de los Beatles, y en el instituto, era suplente en todos los equipos deportivos.
Descubrí mi pasión por casualidad durante un húmedo verano a los 15 años. Mi amiga Lindsay, mayor y mucho más guapa, me recogió en su Pontiac carmesí. Recorrimos la calle Yonge en Toronto hasta casa de su amiga Andrea, y fue entonces cuando la vi por primera vez. Las texturas, los colores, el estampado... me dio un vuelco el corazón al ver una pulsera que Andrea había hecho. Han pasado más de 25 años y sigo en ello. He aprendido y sigo aprendiendo experimentando... a veces funciona de maravilla a la primera, y a menudo no.
Entre los veinte y los treinta y tantos, tenía un par de tiendas, una en el centro y también vendía al por mayor. Pero después de unos diez años, eso me pasó factura. Aprendí, a través de una hernia discal y un hormigueo en las manos, que ya no podía trabajar de 80 a 100 horas semanales. Mi identidad y mi trabajo estaban estrechamente entrelazados. Mi ego se enorgullecía de trabajar con estilistas, diseñar para celebridades y desfiles de moda, y no sabía qué hacer con este cambio indeseado. Así que me deprimí. Y finalmente acudí a un gran terapeuta: Lloyd Gilbert. Aunque entonces no lo veía así... fue una bendición disfrazada (nota mental: recuerda confiar en la vida). Tuve el privilegio de tener tiempo libre para introspeccionar y enfrentarme a mí misma. Creo que trabajar en mí fue lo que "atrajo" a mi amor, Alan.
Dos bebés más tarde (con solo un año y medio de diferencia; un gran respeto por las madres gemelas y solteras), lancé una nueva línea... una especie de tercer bebé. Y la llamé Ruby Blue Co (Ruby es nuestro apellido, Blue representa nuestra comunidad playera, y Co... ¡suena genial, ¿verdad?!). Trabajo desde casa. El horario flexible me permite pasar tiempo con mi familia, mantenerme al día con la interminable limpieza y cocina (empecé a cocinar a los 35), y desde hace tres años, volví a la Universidad de Toronto a tiempo parcial (intentando superar un arrepentimiento oculto que tenía: haber abandonado la universidad después del primer año).
INSPIRACIÓN: La mayor parte de la inspiración detrás de mis joyas proviene de la Madre Naturaleza... desde las increíbles combinaciones de colores que existen hasta los materiales que utilizo en mis diseños, como el vidrio marino y la madera flotante (que consigo en la playa cerca de casa). Otras veces, la inspiración surge de una canción, un poema, la historia de otra persona o un hermoso estampado en una prenda.
GRATITUD: De pequeño, mi familia y yo nos mudábamos mucho por motivos de supervivencia. Ahora que soy mayor y tengo mi propia familia, me siento verdaderamente bendecido de haber arraigado en la comunidad de Beach en Toronto. Un lugar donde no solo conocemos a nuestros vecinos, sino que también podemos contar unos con otros e incluso hacer barbacoas juntos.
OBJETIVO: Me gustaría contribuir a un mundo más limpio. Esto se refleja en mi trabajo. En muchos de mis diseños utilizo materiales reciclados y estoy trabajando para lograr un embalaje 100 % compostable, incluyendo mis bolsas reutilizables para joyas y el papel de regalo.
MISIÓN: Mi misión en la vida y en mi negocio es difundir ALEGRÍA. Espero lograrlo con mis alegres joyas y la atención al cliente que brindo.
Como pequeña empresa con sede en la vibrante ciudad de Toronto, honro el territorio tradicional de los pueblos Mississaugas del Crédito, Anishinaabe, Chippewa, Haudenosaunee y Wendat. Esta tierra, protegida por el Tratado 13 y el Pacto Wampum del Plato con una Cuchara, ha sido durante mucho tiempo un lugar de encuentro para diversas comunidades. Hoy en día, sigue siendo el hogar de muchas Primeras Naciones, inuit y métis. Juntos, celebramos la rica historia de esta tierra y nos comprometemos a fomentar vínculos significativos con sus habitantes originales.

MY STORY IN 400 WORDS OR LESS: Born a tomboy... it surprises even me to be in the jewellery business. I mean until age 6, I had a mushroom cut resembling one of The Beatles and in high school, I was a bench-warmer for every single sports team.
I accidentally discovered my passion during a humid summer when I was 15. My older and much cooler friend Lindsay had picked me up in her crimson Pontiac. We cruised down Yonge Street in Toronto, to her friend Andrea’s house and that’s when I first saw it. The textures, the colours, the pattern....my heart skipped a beat at the sight of a bracelet Andrea had made. It's been over 25 years now and I’m still at it. I have learned and continue to learn by experimenting...sometimes this works brilliantly the first go and often it does not.
In my twenties-early thirties I had a couple of shops, mid-town, and wholesaled too. But after about ten years that took a toll on my body. I learned through a herniated disc and tingling hands, that I couldn't work 80–100-hour weeks anymore. My identity and work were intertwined tightly. My ego was proud of working with stylist, designing for celebrities and fashion shows and didn't know what to do with this unwelcome change. So, I became depressed. And eventually saw a great therapist – Lloyd Gilbert. Although I didn't see it this way then....it was a blessing in disguise (note to self: remember to trust in life). I was gifted with the down time to introspect and face myself. I think working on me is what "attracted" my sweetie, Alan.
Fast forward to two babies later (just a year and a half apart from each other - huge respect for twin moms and single moms), I launched a new line...a third baby of sorts. And I named her Ruby Blue Co (Ruby is our last name, Blue represents our beach community, and Co...sounds cool eh?!). I work from my home office. The flexible hours allow me to spend time with my family, somewhat keep up with the endless cleaning and cooking (I only started cooking at 35), and as of three years ago, I’m back at University of Toronto part-time (trying to mend a silent regret I had – dropping out after my first year).
INSPIRATION: Most of the inspiration behind my jewellery comes from Mother Nature....from the incredible colour combinations out there to the materials that I use in my designs, such as sea glass and driftwood (which I source at the beach near our home). Other times inspiration strikes from a song, or a poem, or another human's story, or a beautiful pattern on a garment.
GRATITUDE: When I was a little kid, my family and I moved around a lot, for survival reasons. Now that I am older and have a family of my own, I feel truly blessed to have set our roots in the Beach community in Toronto. A place where we not only know our neighbours we can count on one another and even have BBQs together.
GOAL: I would like to try to contribute to a cleaner world. This includes in my work. In many of my designs I use recycled materials, and I am working towards 100% compostable packing, including my reusable jewellery pouches, and paper gift wrap.
MISSION: My mission in life, and in my business is to spread JOY. I hope I do this with my cheerful jewels and the customer service I provide.
As a small business based in the vibrant city of Toronto, I honour the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishinaabe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples. This land, protected under Treaty 13 and the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Covenant, has long been a gathering place for diverse communities. Today, it remains home to many First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. Together, we celebrate the rich history of this land and commit to fostering meaningful connections with its original caretakers.
