A little bit about how I got started and my design process...
I launched Radiant Home Studio in 2013 as a way to share my passion for sewing, design, and fabric. It started with an idea—"I can sew a tote bag to carry all of our water bottles!"—that turned into something more. A few people asked about the bag, so I decided to write the sewing pattern and sell patterns digitally.
I have loved learning more about design and business along the way. I've added several patterns to my shop since the beginning, and greatly expanded my skills through classes and collaborations with others. I've had patterns published on websites such as Martha Stewart Living, Spoonflower, and Sew Mama Sew. I have also contributed patterns to Stitch magazine, Sew It All, Sew News, and "On-the-Go Bags - 15 Handmade Bags, Purses, and Organizers".
My pattern development begins with an idea and sketches in one of the many notebooks I have around my house, or even on scraps of the kids' school papers. Whatever works, right? Several paper revisions, and lots of math later...
I make at least 3 prototypes of each item before I finalize the design. I sew each item and carefully photograph and illustrate each step for later use in the instructions. I create technical drawings and diagrams for the pattern and include photos when diagrams are not sufficient. My patterns are thoroughly tested by about a dozen lovely volunteers. When I receive their final feedback, I make any adjustments and then offer my pattern for sale.
It has been very rewarding to see a simple idea become a usable pattern, and I find it so satisfying to see what you create with my patterns! The Retro Rucksack, a vintage-style backpack with convertible straps, has been a popular choice for modern sewists. And the most favorite addition is the stylish notebook cover!
In addition to sewing patterns, my designs are available as fabric through Spoonflower and Clothworks! You can find more of my stationery and home goods at OVERFLOWANDCO.com.
Please share your finished items with me...I love to see them! #radianthomestudiopatterns
