Real coaching tools for young athletes — built from a real comeback
I'm Coach Isaac — a handball player, a coach, and a dad.
November 30, 2016. A game. I went up for a rebound, landed wrong, and felt what I can only describe as a kick from behind. I turned around — nobody there. I already knew.
Torn Achilles tendon.
The next several months were the hardest of my life. Two months in a cast. Four months on crutches. A lot of pain, a lot of dark thoughts, and the slow, grinding work of learning to walk again before I could even think about playing.
At some point in that process, I had to make a decision: quit, or figure out how to come back.
I figured out how to come back.
On August 15, 2017, I got medical clearance to return to the court. On September 12 — same city, same opponent, same gym where it happened — I played in the starting lineup.
That experience taught me something I hadn't been able to teach before: what it actually takes to reset after a hard moment. Not just move on. Actually process it, decide what comes next, and do the work — even when it doesn't feel like it's working.
After that, I started coaching.
Everything I teach my athletes now comes from that period. The goal-setting framework. The process habits. The reset protocol for mistakes, bad games, and setbacks.
I built these journals because too many young athletes quit not from lack of talent, but because nobody gave them the tools to handle the hard moments.
This is those tools.
