Sembra ieri che ho capito davvero la magia del Tió de Nadal. Era la vigilia di Natale e la mia cugina più piccola, di soli 2 anni, è entrata nel soggiorno dei miei genitori. È rimasta subito affascinata dal tronco sorridente con gli occhi che la fissavano. E da lì in poi le cose sono solo migliorate!
Dopo averle insegnato la famosa canzone "Cagatió", cantò con entusiasmo e iniziò a colpire con entusiasmo il tronco con un bastone. In quel momento, sembrava che fosse stata posseduta: era assolutamente esilarante! Poi accadde la magia: Tió fece la cacca dei regali. Non riusciva a crederci.
Strillava di gioia mentre apriva i regali e aiutava tutti gli altri a far fare la cacca a Tió. La notte si trasformò in un turbine di risate, caos e furtivi tentativi di afferrare il bastone per un'altra possibilità di ottenere altri regali da Tió. Alle 3 del mattino, decidemmo finalmente che Tió si era guadagnato il suo riposo e lo rimandammo nella foresta, fino al prossimo Natale.
Festeggio il Tió de Nadal da quando ho memoria, a casa, a scuola, con gli amici, ma quella sera, attraverso gli occhi di mio cugino, ho finalmente capito la magia. Da allora, il Pooping Log è diventato il cuore della celebrazione natalizia della nostra famiglia.
Facciamo un salto di 25 anni e io e mio marito ci ritroviamo a Chicago, lontani dalla famiglia ma decisi a non perdere la tradizione. Per il nostro primo Natale in città, abbiamo creato il nostro Tió.
Non ci è voluto molto perché tutti quelli che lo vedevano se ne innamorassero. Presto, gli amici hanno iniziato a chiedere il loro Tió. Ne abbiamo fatti alcuni come regali, ma poi anche gli amici degli amici hanno iniziato a richiederli. È stato allora che abbiamo deciso di aprire il nostro negozio Etsy.
Ma non ci siamo fermati qui. La nostra missione di diffondere l'amore per le tradizioni natalizie catalane continua a crescere. Oltre al Tió de Nadal fatto a mano, ora offriamo il nostro abbigliamento e accessori di marca, celebrando l'umorismo e il fascino del Pooping Log. Abbiamo anche iniziato a importare i tradizionali caganers: stravaganti statuine del presepe che raffigurano personaggi famosi o persone comuni in, diciamo, una posa molto naturale: mentre fanno la cacca. Queste figure sfacciate sono una parte amata dei presepi catalani, simboleggiando umiltà, umanità e un pizzico di umorismo durante le festività.
Tió de Nadal, o The Pooping Log, occupa un posto speciale nei nostri cuori. È una tradizione che ci impegniamo a preservare e condividere, che sia in Catalogna, negli Stati Uniti o persino a Timbuktu!

It feels like just yesterday that I truly understood the magic of the Tió de Nadal. It was Christmas Eve, and my youngest cousin, only 2 years old, walked into my parents' living room. She was immediately fascinated by the smiling log with eyes staring back at her. And things only got better from there!
After teaching her the famous "Cagatió" song, she sang along with gusto and eagerly started hitting the log with a stick. In that moment, she looked like she’d been possessed—it was absolutely hilarious! Then the magic happened: Tió pooped presents. She couldn’t believe it.
She squealed with joy as she opened her gifts and helped everyone else make Tió poop theirs. The night turned into a whirlwind of laughter, chaos, and sneaky attempts to grab the stick for another chance to coax more gifts from Tió. By 3 a.m., we finally decided Tió had earned his rest and sent him back to the forest—until next Christmas.
I’ve been celebrating Tió de Nadal since I can remember—at home, at school, with friends—but that night, through my cousin’s eyes, I finally understood the magic. Since then, the Pooping Log has become the heart of our family’s Christmas celebration.
Fast forward 25 years, and my husband and I find ourselves in Chicago, far from family but determined not to miss out on the tradition. For our first Christmas in the city, we crafted our own Tió.
It didn’t take long for everyone who saw him to fall in love. Soon, friends started asking for their own Tió. We made a few as gifts, but then friends of friends started requesting them too. That’s when we decided to open our Etsy shop.
But we didn’t stop there. Our mission to spread the love for Catalan holiday traditions continues to grow. In addition to handcrafted Tió de Nadal, we now offer our own branded apparel and accessories—celebrating the humor and charm of the Pooping Log. We’ve also started importing traditional caganers: whimsical nativity figurines depicting famous characters or everyday people in, let’s say, a very natural pose—pooping. These cheeky figures are a beloved part of Catalan nativity scenes, symbolizing humility, humanity, and a touch of humor during the holiday season.
