Quando ero più giovane amavo passeggiare con mio padre, vagando per i boschi vicino a casa nostra alla ricerca di corna fuse. Nella maggior parte dei casi non ne abbiamo mai trovato nessuno, ma abbiamo sempre visto o trovato qualcosa di speciale, che fosse un nido di uccello lira, una pianta insolita o magari un ornitorinco che nuotava in una diga.
Il mio amore per la vita all'aria aperta e un interesse un po' strano per le rocce mi hanno poi portato a studiare geologia per alcuni anni (la scusa perfetta per andare in giro alla ricerca di pietre preziose). Quando questa non si è trasformata nella carriera che mi aspettavo, ho capito che dovevo cambiare rotta.
Ho sempre desiderato creare qualcosa di indossabile sfruttando la bellezza naturale che mi circonda, e poi quando ho scoperto la resina, mi sono innamorata!
Ogni gioiello che realizzo è realizzato a mano con una miscela di materiali. Sono un grande fan del mantenere le cose reali e quindi mi sforzo di utilizzare materiali non tinti, grezzi e naturali, ove possibile.
I fiori, le foglie, i muschi e i licheni sono stati per lo più raccolti durante una delle mie tante avventure nelle foreste e sulle montagne del sud del Victoria, o talvolta coltivati nella piccola fattoria dei miei genitori ai piedi dei Dandenong Ranges. Le pietre preziose provengono da tutto il mondo.
Utilizzo l'eco-resina come mezzo per la maggior parte dei pezzi. Questa resina è parzialmente realizzata con sottoprodotti di altre industrie rinnovabili e come tale ha un’impronta di carbonio inferiore rispetto alle resine convenzionali. Inoltre, resiste all'ingiallimento nel tempo e contiene componenti resistenti ai raggi UV che aiutano a prevenire lo sbiadimento dei prodotti botanici incorporati.
I miei prodotti cambiano costantemente mentre trovo nuovi modi per catturare il mondo che mi circonda. È davvero sorprendente quello che puoi vedere quando ti fermi a guardare (:
When I was younger I loved to go walking with my dad, wandering through the forests near our house searching for cast antlers. Most of the time we never found any, but we always saw or found something special, be it a lyrebird nest, an unusual plant or maybe a platypus swimming in a dam.
My love of being outdoors and a slightly uncool interest in rocks then led me to study geology for a few years (the perfect excuse to go traipsing off in search of gemstones). When this didn't turn into the career I expected, I realised I needed to change tack.
I’d always wanted to make something wearable from the natural beauty around me, and then when I discovered resin, I was sold!
Each piece of jewellery I make is hand-made from a mixture of materials. I'm a big fan of keeping things real, and therefore strive to use undyed, raw and natural materials where possible.
The flowers, leaves, moss and lichen have mostly been collected on one of my many adventures into the forests and mountains of southern Victoria, or sometimes grown on my parent’s small flower-farm in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges. Gemstones come from across the globe.
I use eco-resin as a medium for most pieces. This resin is partially made from the by-products of other renewable industries, and as such has a lower carbon footprint than conventional resins. It also resists yellowing with time, and contains UV resistant components which help prevent fading of the embedded botanicals.
My products are constantly changing as I find new ways to capture the world around me. It really is amazing what you can see when you just stop to look (:
