Making Maps to Inspire Stories
La "evolución" de Writing Maps fue un proceso gradual. Todo se produjo de manera bastante orgánica. He estado enseñando escritura creativa durante unos veinte años y siempre he estado interesado en la escritura que ocurre fuera del escritorio, fuera de casa, en galerías de arte, parques, cafés y edificios públicos. Soy un gran fanático de las guías de escritura, esos libros de escritura creativa con ejercicios e indicaciones. Writing Down the Bones de Natalie Goldberg y Steering the Craft de Ursula Le Guin son dos de mis favoritas. Había estado pensando en armar una guía de escritura creativa, para hacer un libro de todo lo que he descubierto sobre la escritura, pero quería hacerlo de una manera diferente, no tanto en forma de libro.
Cuando comencé a dirigir mis talleres de escritura "al aire libre", me fascinaron cada vez más los mapas, no solo los mapas de calles para guiarte por la ciudad, sino también los mapas artísticos, los mapas creativos, los mapas que son íntimos y personales, los mapas que representan una experiencia privada de la ciudad, de la vida en general. Básicamente, uní las ideas: enseñar a escribir, escribir en lugares públicos y una respuesta íntima al mundo mapeándolo. Luego trabajé con algunos ilustradores y diseñadores increíbles y juntos creamos estos mapas de escritura.
The “evolution” of Writing Maps was a gradual process. It all came about quite organically. I’ve been teaching creative writing for about twenty years and have always been interested in the writing that happens away from the writing desk, away from home, in art galleries, parks, cafés, and public buildings. I’m a big fan of writing guides – those creative writing books with exercises and prompts. Natalie Goldberg’s Writing Down the Bones and Ursula Le Guin’s Steering the Craft are two of my favourites. I'd been thinking about putting together a creative writing guide, to make a book out of everything I’ve discovered about writing, but I wanted to do it in a different way, not so much in book form.
When I started running my "outdoor" writing workshops, I became more and more fascinated with maps, not just street maps to guide you round the city, but artistic maps, creative maps, maps that are intimate and personal, maps that depict a private experience of the city, of life in general! Basically, I joined the ideas together: teaching writing, writing in public places and an intimate response to the world by mapping it. Then I worked with some amazing illustrators and designers and together we created these Writing Maps.
