When stepping outside of Japan, it becomes apparent that a peculiar version of "pseudo-Japanese" culture seems to be everywhere abroad.
For example, you might frequently come across things like:
Sushi restaurants run by non-Japanese people, serving dishes with odd presentation styles, or
T-shirts with bizarre words that make you wonder, "Why did they choose that?"
This phenomenon is just as noticeable on online selling platforms.
You might see things like:
Kanji-like characters in AI-generated images,
Pictures of people in kimonos that have been flipped, resulting in the overlap being on the wrong side, making it look like funeral attire,
Images of samurai holding swords that aren't even katana,
Or vertically written Japanese text using fonts that don't support proper formatting, leaving elongated sound marks ("ー") awkwardly horizontal... The list goes on.
Even when the seller claims to be based in Japan, you can't always let your guard down.
For those of us born and raised in Japan, there's a shared intuition: you can often tell if a design—whether it's a phrase, font choice, or image—was actually created by a Japanese person. If you don't believe me, go ahead and ask a Japanese friend if they think a particular product was made by someone Japanese. You'll see what I mean.
Personally, I sometimes find this "quirky pseudo-Japanese" style amusing, but at the same time, I feel bad for people who unknowingly purchase such items.
"That Japanese on your T-shirt is wrong...! If a Japanese person sees it, it's going to be a bit (or very) embarrassing...!"
I believe many Japanese sellers feel the same way. These clearly unnatural pseudo-Japanese designs can easily create misunderstandings about Japanese culture and language. That's why I want people to experience authentic Japan!
Which brings me to my shop:
"I offer designs that are authentic and won't look strange to the average Japanese person."
