This adorable print of a “Rhinoceros” is from the book “Beasts Shown to the Children” by Percy J. Billinghurst and described by Lena Dalkieth. Published by T.C. & E.C Jack of London & Edinburgh, there is no copyright in this book but it is believed to have been published circa 1900’s based on other books in the Shown to Children series. Little is known about Billinghurst except that he was an illustrator, a designer of bookplates and a talented animal draughtsman who did clever pen drawings in elaborate frames for children’s books around 1900. In addition to illustrating the Beasts he also illustrated A Hundred Fables of Aesop (1899) and A Hundred Anecdotes of Animals (1901).
Each colour plate in this book is described by Lena Dalkieth, who wrote in the introduction, “This book it is made, little Philip, for you, For you and the rest of the dear children too; For big and for biggest, for less and for least, For all who love bird or wee insect or beast.”
The print definition and quality are typical of that time period, although this print is on fairly high grade paper, yet it is still lacking much of the sharp clarity that is available today with offset printing but adds timeless charm to this beautiful print. The colors are as vibrant today as when published 100+ years ago, and offer a glimpse into art created at the turn of the century and how the Victorian age of discovery opened new worlds in the education of children.
There is slight yellowing of the paper around the actual image as well as some darker aging around the page edges. The rough edge from the binding has been removed but that is the only "altering" that has taken place (the interior edge has been trimmed). Prints are carefully mounted on mats to simplify framing after purchase and to protect the print during display/shipment. All mat materials are acid and lignin free, the actual print is not archival safe. The original book measured approximately 6-1/2 x 4-1/2” but the book plate is being sold custom matted to fit in an 8x10 standard frame.
