About

Where Heart meets Sew

Back in '09, I opened Heart and Sew to promote local art, inspire adults and kids, provide creative workshops and parties, and do what I do best... make custom items based on your ideas and inspirations!

This experience was truly priceless, and a dream come true for me! I met so many extraordinary people.. many whom I now consider some of my best friends! I never could've imagined the impact my l
ittle shop would have on our growing art community.. at one point, Heart and Sew housed over 90 different artists' works!

To say this journey was a learning experience is definitely putting in lightly! I had never ran a "real" business before, never even worked in retail! But, I did my best, took advice whenever someone offered it, and placed all my trust in God because I knew He was the ring-leader of this show! So many of my prayers were answered, and I would tell any and everyone that came through that creeky screen door of Heart and Sew.

So many awesome opportunities came along that allowed me to "share the art in my heart".. like being featured in our local Sasee magazine {with Selena's help}, showcasing items at the Barefoot Women's event {with Jennifer's help}, even making an appearance on LIVE t.v. to talk about the products and services {with Sybil's help}!! See what I mean about those great friends??!!! :) Priceless!

In March of '11 Heart and Sew transformed into Serendipity... Same location, same concept, less crowded, more help! My dear friends Jennifer and Sybil partnered up with me to share some of the work/responsibilities/space/vision! We decided on the name change, because even though I loved "Heart and Sew".. not a day went by that some little lady didn't walk in asking if I sold fabric, thread, needles, even machines! And frankly, we all just got tired of telling them no! haha! So.. Serendipity is was, because there were always random and wonderful things happening there! :)

The girls and I participated in lots of shows and festivals, including the Virginia Beach Surf Art Show, the Dickens Christmas Show, the NC Oyster Festival, the St. Patricks Day Festival, and a few more. We made lots of memories, contacts, and all in all had some great experiences together! I'm sure we will continue to collaborate on ideas and events in the future, so stay tuned! :)

If any of you have ever been involved in a business where "you" are the main supplier of merchandise, you know how difficult (and rewarding) this can be. With each of us growing as artists, our customer base began to heighten... along with the demand of our goods and services! We thought it best to downsize, eliminating the 'retail' aspect of the shop, and focusing more on the work that we do as individuals.

In February on '12 we officially closed the doors of Serendipity, aka Heart and Sew and moved into workshops. Jennifer and I share a spaced above the Bike Doctor on Sea Mountain Highway in Cherry Grove, and Sybil has a working studio out of her home in Myrtle Beach. The three of us will always be 'Serendipity Sistas' and will continue to work together on projects and collaborations! These girls have been a major key in my creative career, and inspirational to say the least! I love them so much, and am so grateful that Heart and Sew brought them into my life! ♥ You can check them out at www.sybilalfano.com, and Sarah Catherine's Cottage on facebook!

As for me, I am steady sewin'!! My sweet hubby built on a wonderful studio at our home here in North Myrtle Beach, and it's simply perfect! The majority of my time these days is devoted to making "Memory Quilts"... where I take other peoples clothing or miscellaneous materials (really, anything that can be cut with scissors) and turn them into a keepsake quilt to enjoy for years to come! I feel truly blessed doing what I do, because just the look on their faces and the tears in their eyes when they see all of their memories tied into one quilt is so rewarding! It never ever gets old! And each quilt is so special and unique, making them never ever gets old, either!

I give all the thanks to my husband, my family, my friends, and most importantly my God for supporting me, loving me, and guiding me through this journey.

"I have set the Lord always before me; Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved." Psalms 16:8

I love to laugh, I love to live.. I love to sew, I love to give. I feel completely honored and blessed doing what I do... Being able to turn someones most cherished items into something they can love forever, long after I'm gone.. is truly humbling.
