About

THE STORY BEHIND 2ANGELS4ABBY

2Angels4Abby is one of the three most important things in my life: my family, my commitment to the awareness and search for a cure for blood cancers, and my love of designing and creating artistic useful jewelry. At this point in my life, I cannot see a time when this shop will not be in my life. Making artistic beaded lanyards and similar useful jewelry has not always been part of my life.

WHY OUR SHOP WAS OPENED
I have enjoyed experimenting with beads and creating jewelry with them for as long as I can remember. I always liked to have jewelry that matched whatever I was wearing. Between my career as an early childhood administrator running busy preschools, my commitment to my role of Mom, and my tendency to be a perpetual graduate student, beading seemed to always get pushed to the back burner. When my daughter became an elementary school teacher, I began to extend my creative jewelry making juices to designing lanyards for her to use for her ID badge and school keys.
It was not, however, until January 2011 when my daughter’s best friend Abby, also a teacher, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) that I began to reevaluate my priorities in life. Within a few weeks after her diagnosis, I left my career of over 25 years, decided to convert my beading passion into a business both giving me the permission to spend time doing what I have loved for years, as well as the time to devote to the people and causes that were most important to me.
During my second 3-week trip to Massachusetts to help Abby, who was a single mother of a spirited four-year old girl, and her family deal with her sudden debilitating illness; everything seemed to fall into place. Having spent numerous days keeping Abby company in her room at Mass General Hospital both before and after her bone marrow transplant, I decided that I wanted to support those fighting leukemia and other blood cancers in whatever way I could. Since I love to create beaded jewelry and the two groups of people most prominent in Abby’s life are those in the teaching and medical professions, both of whom generally need to wear ID badges, I realized what I needed to do. I decided to make and sell beaded lanyards and similar jewelry and donate a portion of the sales to help fight leukemia.

HOW THE SHOP GOT ITS NAME
When I was leaving Massachusetts to return home and Abby referred to me as an angel for helping her the way I had, everything fell into place. It was at that moment that the idea for Angels4Abby was born. I knew that I would open an online shop by that name in which I would sell beaded ID lanyards and other related beaded jewelry and accessories. Since leukemia is not the only important in need of increased public awareness and support, I decided that while I would make lanyards in a variety of styles to accommodate a wide range of individual taste, my primary focus would be awareness lanyards and jewelry enabling people to show support for their chosen cause in a beautiful yet practical way. When my daughter heard my plan, she decided that while she works fulltime so her time is more limited, she wanted to help me in any way that she could to help Abby and the debilitating disease that she continues to fight on a daily basis.

DESIGNING AND NAMING ITEMS
In keeping with my love of the artistic creativity involved in designing jewelry, as I was planning my shop I immediately knew that the items would, in general, all be one of a kind (OOAK) so no one will ever see an identical item to what they are wearing. Doing so means working with a wide variety of both focal beads and those that are needed to complement and support. Trying to purchase all of the beads that I need from one source would be greatly limiting, therefore, I leave no stone unturned. I purchase beads from other Etsy shops, through eBay, as well as several online jewelry supply stores. Currently, my shop bead drawers contain hundreds of different colors and kinds of beads. They include: handmade lampwork beads, Czech glass beads, millefiori beads, polymer clay beads, ceramic beads, and metal beads of various types. In spite of the variety and number of beads in my inventory, I am always searching for the next perfect set of beads.
Once I select the focal beads for a given lanyard and choose how the rest of the item will be constructed, I look at the finished piece and give it a name according to how the item speaks to me. Sometimes it is a song name, sometimes the name of a food or beverage, while others are just creative phrases. In all cases, I provide a brief explanation of the name as part of the item description.

TYPES OF ITEMS WE CREATE
While a number of our lanyards and other useful pieces of jewelry have an “awareness” theme, we are not limiting ourselves to it. Whether your taste is elegant or casual, whimsical or steampunk, glitzy or serene; you will find something that you like here.

CHARITY DONATION FOR ALL SALES
I am excited at the prospect of being able to spend more time doing what I love best—caring for my loved ones AND using my creativity to make beaded jewelry, while simultaneously helping to support a cause that is near and dear to my heart. In keeping with that mission, a portion of the proceeds from all of Angels4Abby’s sales will be donated to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) to help fund lifesaving research and provide information and support to patients throughout their cancer journey.

Thank you for taking the time to browse through the various items in our shop and especially for reading the story of how and why Angels4Abby was born.

2angels4abby is definitely my "baby". Designing one of a kind useful, yet artistic jewelry AND supporting the blood cancer awareness and research are two of the things for which I live.

  • Alison Hart Freeman

    Designer, Creator, Photographer

Alison was an integral part of this shop when it was opened. She was one of the "2 angels"; designing, creating, photographing as needed. After getting married last spring, however, she has not had as much time to devote to the shop.

  • Roy Hart

    Assistant, Creator, Photographer

My husband Roy is always willing to step in whenever I need help. If I am out of town and items sell, he packs and mails them; as Alison has begun to step back, he has taken photographs and assisted however needed.

Additional policies and FAQs
PRICING: All 2Angels4Abby pieces are hand crafted original designs. Individual prices are based on the actual cost of the materials used in creating the specific piece. Since some beads are more expensive than others, items in which the costlier beads are included are more expensive than average.

CUSTOMIZATION: The exact length of each lanyard is included in its description. While we have done our best to make them the size desired by most people, we want to make sure that you are happy with your purchase. Therefore, if you need your lanyard to be either longer or shorter it can be adjusted to a custom length at no additional charge
.
Many of the lanyards that we create are made in one continuous loop to reduce the possibility of irritation at the nape of the neck. Some employers, however, require that all lanyards worn by staff members have breakaway clasps. To accommodate their employees, we have premade some of our lanyards with a magnetic break-away clasp at the nape of the neck.

If, however, you fall in love with one that does not already have a breakaway clasp, one can be added for a small additional fee of $2.50. Likewise, if you choose a lanyard that has a magnetic clasp, but you prefer or need a non-magnetic clasp, we can change the magnetic clasp to a lobster or toggle clasp for no additional charge. Please specify any changes and adjustments that you would like done in the notes to seller at checkout. Have something that you want but you don't see? Let us know and we will do our best to make a custom item that meets your specific needs and desires. We love being creative with beads and what better way than to make a customer’s vision become a reality.
