Stitched stuff for families
I love many types of art and crafts, this love spurred me to earn a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Ceramics and a want to share my creativity with others.
However, this shop isn't about ceramics, so how do you go from making pottery and sculpture to sewing? Sewing has always had a special place in my heart. My Grandma taught me to sew, I will always remember going to her sewing circle and the ladies working together to make the most beautiful quilts. In high school and college I worked in several fabric stores, this provided a unique learning experience and fueled my obsession for designer fabrics (I had fabric stuffed everywhere in my room).
After college, I worked a day job and I sold different crafts at craft shows to make money for pottery equipment and after a few years I had my own pottery studio. It was an amazing 2 years! Working my day job, evenings and weekends would be spent in the studio. It was during this time we decided to start our family. I tried to maintain my studio after my daughter was born, but I finally had to choose between my new baby girl and my studio. It was an easy decision for me - family always comes first. I put my studio in storage, I still have my equipment and someday I will make pottery on a beach somewhere!
I never lost the drive to a have my own creative business, but I knew that it still was not the right time to start back making pottery. Throughout the years, I never stopped sewing; mainly for me, my kids, family and friends. It was with their encouragement and my husband losing his job, that I started 2 Sprouts Stitchery in 2009. Deciding to sew as a business was the easy part of starting back, actually describing to people what I made was hard. Who knew? I didn't feel like a seamstress and I wasn't a quilter. When someone asked me what I was making on a potter's wheel, the answer came easy "a bowl, vase, etc". But when someone asked me what was I sewing? I would stammer and say "I'm sewing stuff". Instead of trying to come up with some sort of elaborate description, I decided to keep it simple, I sew stuff! Since I was already sewing clothes and toys for my kids it made what I was going to focus on really easy. I love to sew for babies and kids - they're so cute, right?
I sew everything in my shop myself but 2 Sprouts Stitchery is a family affair. My wonderful husband and 2 kids (in case you were wondering - I called them sprouts when they were babies) are there to help me every step of the way. The kids like to help come up with new ideas and pick fabric (online at least - the trips to the fabric store usually illicit the AGAIN? whine). I especially love when the kids are in my sewing room "making" things of their own. I love being able to continue my artist journey with them, they are my life and inspiration. They keep me young, make me laugh, and are there to remind me to always have fun. I really want that joy, laughter, and fun they share with me to be in everything I sew.
I hope you enjoy my "stuff" as much as I enjoy making it.
Loving all kinds of arts and crafts, I earned a Fine Arts degree and was a studio potter for many years. I returned to sewing after I married my sweetheart and bff and had our 2 children. They are the light of my life and constant inspirations.
I hope you enjoy looking around my shop and share in my love for sewing for families. For more information about me, please see my profile, visit 2 Sprouts Stitchery on facebook for sneak peaks and what I am working on.
