50littlebirds' Shop Announcement

I begin developing my birds in the field. I spend hours--day and night-- walking and paddling parks and wilderness listening, watching and studying birds. When I return I obsessively fill sketchbooks with notes and drawing about the birds I love.

In the studio these drawing become patterns and these patterns become carvings. With white pine, bits of wire and nails, scraps of wood and discarded tins I build the birds of my life. I build them so that they can be held in your hand and studied and passed on to others. With the carving the story follows. Folks add to this story from their own experiences.

I've planned a six week single handed birding expedition for this summer. I will be paddling the Northern Forest Canoe Trail throughout upstate New York, across Lake Champlain and Vermont. After a brief (upstream) jog into Quebec I will paddle across New Hampshire and Into Maine.

The proceeds from my sales go towards purchasing a canoe and technology for this expedition. Your support is appreciated and will go a long way in supporting my work in the future.

Thank you.

Welcome

Welcome to 50 Little Bird for Blue Stone Folk School!

Each of the 50 little birds is designed and carved using traditional hand tools. A specialized finish technique involves up to 20 different steps using traditional methods and materials to achieve a finish that not only looks old, but exhibits complex and subtle colors and textures. A visiting artist once offered that the birds beg to be held in the hand and rubbed.

50 Little Birds is a project begun early in 2009 in order to fund technology and construction costs at Blue Stone Folk School, a traditional arts program in Noblesville, IN. As of November of 2009 over $1500 has been raised for the school. Every dollar of sales of birds numbered 1-50 goes towards the Folk School. 10% of birds numbered over 50 benefit the school.
