The A19 Story

Like many creative and successful businesses, the idea for A19
began on the back of a cocktail napkin. Owner Cinnamon
Alvarez and a friend sat down at a local watering hole and
dreamily hatched their plans to run their own shows. They’d
do what they really loved and inspired them. They’d treat their
employees like family. They’d make their own hours. They’d
never work weekends and they’d take long vacations. They’d
change the world! (Okay, maybe they’d just make a difference.)

At the start of the next workweek, Cinnamon sat down with
her boss, looked him square in the eye and launched into her
jaw-dropping proposal: She either wanted to purchase the
company or start one of her own. To her surprise, he thought it was a
great idea and encouraged her to explore purchasing the business.

Flash forward to a couple of months later. Reality soon set in;
crunching numbers and creating a business plan made it clear
there was much more to this entrepreneur thing than vision
and determination. Cinnamon needed support – and lots of it.
So her ex-boss became her mentor; she then approached key
co-workers – each an exceptionally talented craftsperson – to
see if they were passionate enough to make a go at starting a
new company. And A19 was born.

That was 1998, and the drive to create the highest quality
handmade lighting fixtures, to provide attention and service
unparalleled in any business, is a continuing success.

I’ve built A19 on one overarching principle, people feeling genuinely happy and fulfilled. I'm so passionate about it that I even wrote a book on the subject. A19 is my "baby" and our team is my family. You make it possible and I am grateful.

Frequently asked questions
Custom and personalized orders

YES WE CAN!

We LOVE being able to apply ANY color to our fixtures. It's our specialty. Just specify the brand and color and consider it done.

Custom sizes and shapes* are possible (best in large quantities). We can do onsie-twosie's but it's a lot of work (which means it can get expensive if you only want one of something). *We have A LOT of ceramic shapes. If you have something in mind that you don't see, please contact us. We may just have something that will work for you.

Custom cut-out design motifs are relatively easy for us. If you think you can carve a design into a pumpkin, we can probably cut your design into your choice of ceramic light fixtures.

Wholesale availability

YES! We sell wholesale to qualified* retailers and trade professionals. No job is too small or too large. *Contact us for wholesale pricing.

Care instructions

BISQUE:
Natural "bare bisque" (unpainted ceramic) fixtures can be cleaned by sanding with fine 150-grit sandpaper. Do not use liquid cleaners on the porous bisque surface.

FINISHES:
A19’s finishes are durable enough to hold up both indoors and out. The exterior surface can be dusted or wiped clean with a non-abrasive damp cloth or sponge.

EXTERIOR LOCATIONS:
To prevent water from reaching the electrical connections, apply a bead of silicone around the full perimeter of the fixture housing to seal it to the wall surface.

Gift wrapping and packaging

Please contact us for special gift wrapping or packaging requests. We're happy to help.

Is every fixture from A19 truly handmade in the United States?

YES! Every ceramic pendant and wall sconce is (and always has been) designed, molded, fired, sanded, finished, assembled and shipped from our Southern California studio.

What is A19?

A19 is a woman-owned and operated ceramic lighting artisan manufacturing company in Ontario, California. The technical name for the common household light bulb inspired our name, A19, but our business of making ceramic lighting is unique.

Lighting trivia: An “A" bulb has the classic Edison bulb shape (more like an upside down pair than the letter A). The number “19” refers to the size (nineteen eights of an inch in diameter).

We design the bulk of our light fixtures to accommodate a standard bulb, but our name also illustrates that Cinnamon, our President and founder, is a bit of a geek.

Why ceramic?

Ceramic lighting fixtures are versatile and very durable. Our bare
bisque fixtures are smooth and easy to paint allowing your
fixtures to be any color. Because ceramic is resistant to rust
and corrosion, A19’s ceramic wall sconces and pendants will
outlast comparable metal lighting fixtures. Ceramic is opaque
which conceals view of the bulb and eliminates harsh glare.
Ceramic is also a good insulator improving safety.

Can I paint my fixtures?

YES! If you would like to paint your fixtures, choose "Bare Bisque" for your finish. While bisque is beautiful and completely usable in its natural bare state, you may easily paint bisque with any latex or acrylic paint. No primer is necessary unless you are using an oil-based paint. Care and maintenance instructions are included with
each fixture.
