About

Born to cut...

The rains and dark days of winter have arrived, again, in the Great Pacific Northwest. After a very successful summer doing local shows, it is time to hunker down in my Seattle workshop and begin to replenish my depleted stock, and to get ready for the coming big local Christmas show and the summer season. There is always work to be done.

It has been fun doing local shows during the last few years. My wife Linda and I feel like “Latter Day Hippies” with the van, tent and display cases. We find we have to talk a lot so the people passing by our display understand that what we are selling are unique cut coins, rather than the usual jewelry. Say the word “coins” and they almost always will stop and look.

Tools for producing cut coins can be extremely simple and cheap, or complicated and expensive. It depends how you want the finished product to look. If you only want to cut a few coins for your family and friends there is no need for expensive equipment. A vise, a hand or an electric drill, a saw frame with blades, a few drill bits, a small file and polishing solution should allow you to cut decent coins. If you want to produce almost perfect cut coins for sale you will need some expensive equipment that will allow you to drill, file and cut accurately and quickly. If you want to plate your coins you will have to spend the money for the equipment and solutions that will produce excellent results. As soon as one begins to deal with jewelry suppliers you should have the necessary funds available for all the neat things they want to sell you, and the ability to survive “sticker shock.”

The photos on this site will give you the idea of how I have set up my shop that will enable me to comfortably sit for long hours and produce cut coins to the best of my ability. Top equipment helps, but you will also need patience, a steady hand, and the ability to not get too upset when you ruin a coin that you have almost finished… You will also have to spend time looking for coins to cut, and if you plan to sell on line you should be familiar with computers, and all the sites that are now available to sell your art.

I’m not the coin ring maker or the coin ring maker’s son, but I’ll make coin rings till the coin ring maker comes!

I am now making hand-forged, double-sided, silver coin rings, which helps break up the tension of coin cutting. One day I will do coins, and one day I will do coin rings, which are more forgiving. I suggest that coin cutters should consider doing another form of metal work rather than only piercing. It may help eliminate burn out.

The methods for producing coin rings has drastically changed in the last three or four years. I am sure that there are still “ringers” who produce coin rings by forging and hammering for a couple of hours. That is all well and good, but it wears on the body with repetitive motion problems and battered fingers. If you are only making an occasional ring this method produces excellent rings, and it doesn’t take a lot of money to get started. If you plan to go into the coin ring business you will need some of the equipment that will eliminate injuries, and will enable you to make rings quickly and of high quality.

It didn’t take long for ring makers to realize that there must be an easier way than hammering and they found it… Making rings from coins is fun, and people wanted to learn the secrets. Soon, many instructional videos began to appear on YouTube, and some people began making equipment, and specialized tools, which you can see in my shop photos. The market is now flooded with coin ring makers-some poor and some excellent. Many of my ring sales are local, and I enjoy working with customers so the rings will fit correctly, and any other problems will be quickly taken care of. I will do the same on line, but I never have the pleasure of meeting these customers in person.

I will be pleased to answer any questions about coin cutting or ring making. Contact me through Etsy conversations.
