About

Functional Art: Create Beauty with Beauty

Anthesis Arts was born out of the love for unique and elegant art. Created and operated by Angelique Bochnak, Anthesis Arts strives to provide artists of all levels and experience high quality artist grade watercolor paints and handcarved paint brushes.

After falling in love with handmade watercolor paints from other indie makers, Angelique set out on a mission to perfect the process of making her own handcrafted paints. Through this mission, Angelique discovered an unexpected and fulfilling form of artistic expression. Each color palette offered by Anthesis Arts is an expression of Angelique’s imagination and interpretation of nature through paint. These paint palettes were created after careful consideration of their combination and fluidity on paper. Handmade watercolor paints offer texture, depth, and character that is hard to get from most commercially produced paints.

Our three signature color palettes were designed to with creating beautiful, nature inspired paintings in mind. Current palettes include:
*Coastal – set of eight colors inspired by the calm, cool colors of the coastal/beach shores
*Meadow – set of eight colors inspired by bright colorful fields of flowers swarming with fluttering butterflies and dragon flies
*Forest – set of eight colors inspired by dark, rich colors found deep within an old growth forest

Our palettes are currently offered in four pan/cap sizes.
*Signature Small Petal Palettes (small round caps slightly smaller than traditional half pans)
*Signature Large Petal Palettes (large round caps slightly larger than full pans)
*Traditional Half Pans Palettes
*Traditional Full Pans Palettes

*About our paints**
Each color is hand mulled on a glass slab in small batches to ensure an even mix. No machines are used here. The process is slow, never rushed. Every pigment and the binding solution is weighted out for each and every batch to maintain consistency across batches.

We make our own binding solution from raw products (Gum Arabic, local organic honey, and other natural ingredients) to produce an artist grade quality paint. Our binding solution is a proprietary recipe that we spend a considerable amount of time testing and perfecting to create a paint quality that was top notch. A small amount of natural preservative is added to enhance the longevity of our paints. These paints are highly pigmented and can be diluted with a significant amount of water to produce vibrant paintings.

Each pigment is different and therefore behaves differently with the binding solution. As a result, each pigment has its own formula to produce the final product. We strive to create pan watercolors that have a high re-wetting capacity. Some of our paints will remain tacky to the touch due to this quality.

Not only do we strive to produce a fine, artist grade quality paint, but we also strive to produce a beautiful end product as well. However, our pans/caps will not always look perfect. They may crack or fill unevenly during the drying process, which is normal; however, we strive to minimize this effect as much as possible and our techniques are improving daily. Each pan/cap is hand poured and dried gradually over a few weeks’ time. Yes, that's right, it can take up to three weeks to finish a single batch of paint. Paint takes a very long time to dry, especially for us in Florida where the air is very humid.

We are always working to improve our paints to provide the best quality paints possible. Your feedback is always welcome.

Frequently asked questions

What does Anthesis mean?

Anthesis is the flowering period of a plant. The point from which the bloom opens from a bud.

Do you offer individual pans/caps for sale?

We have had a lot of inquiries and requests for individual paint offerings. While we do not offer individuals at this time, we are working on that as a long-term goal for the shop. Our focus has been creating these sets to be unique and different from other handmade paints that are available. Each of the sets we offer are the result of hours of searching and testing to get the right colors for the artistic expression we were aiming for. We are starting to get in a great routine and schedule where we can start to think beyond these sets. Follow us in Instagram for updates and announcements on the availability of individual paint offerings.

Are your Handcrafted Watercolors Non-Toxic?

Short answer: Yes. Long answer: Most of the pigments we use have been rated as 'non-toxic' by any outside entity. A few of the pigments we use have not. However, those that have not been rated ‘non-toxic’ have no documented toxicity or health issues to humans. Additionally, we use all natural and organic ingredients in our binding solution. For the purpose of watercolor painting, our paints are perfectly safe. We choose to work with natural pigments, ochres and minerals mined from the Earth and avoid the use of modern synthetics or known toxic pigments. If for some reason that ever changes, we will label and advertise the paints accordingly.

Do you accept customized requests or reserve orders?

Depends on the request. At this time we can accommodate requests to reserve one of our color palettes when they are available. Changes or alterations to the palette colors may not be as easily accommodated.

Depending on current supply and demand, we may also be able to fulfill requests to add one or two more colors to an order outside the signature color palettes offered. Best way to know is to ask. Simply message Angelique via Etsy Conversations and she'll respond as soon as possible.

All reserved and custom orders must be paid in full within two days of being posted.
