About

Driven to Distraction

I learned to sew several years ago from my mother and from those home ec classes required in high school. Later I honed my skills and added to my techniques via YouTube.

But it wasn't until I was a wife and mother that I truly began to appreciate what I could do with it. I began by sewing handbags. I even drafted my own patterns for them and that became one of my favorite parts - seeing the vision in my head become reality. Now I make handbags, various pouches and wristlets, aprons, totes and lunch totes. I plan to expand even more in the coming year. I still grow and learn each day, adding to my repertoire of techniques, designs and tools. I remember being frightened of zippers and now I scoff at them in victory.

I also enjoy the look and feel of fabrics and the way that colors play together. Sometimes I see the fabric and I know just what it needs to be and just who would love it. The little details always get me too, the rolls of rick rack, contrasting thread (Do you know they make variegated thread?), ribbon, trim and even the rainbow of zippers and buttons.

Of course, this can all be very distracting, hence my shop name. Because I have so many passions (including digital design and web design), it's hard to fit them all in my brain at once. Not to mention my home.

I work from my kitchen table most of the time, because that is the space available to me. Therefore, were you to drop by my home, you'd see the pile of fabric about to topple off a dining chair, the little hill of buttons on the table and the pins and scraps scattered on the floor. The sewing machine sits in a seat of honor at the dining table, and little spools of thread roll along the surface.

You'd also see my two boys vying for my attention, dinner simmering on the stove, and even my little dog romping around stiffing at my toes as I press and sew barefoot. You'd see my Bible spread out on the counter, because I read it in breaks throughout the day. You wouldn't likely see my husband, unless it was an indistinct blur, because he has his own distractions like our goats, cow and chickens - which I'm scared off and only approach with a stick in my hand. I'm decidedly not a farmer.

So you see there is my life, one giant distraction which makes me joyful and wondrous and quite happy every day.
