My shorty, bib apron has been on since I opened my package from AJ (six hours ago). It is so sweet, soft, beautifully patterned and designed with such great detail that I just had to put it right on and get cracking with all that house care stuff. AJ was so attentive in her responses and consistently kept me up to date on the arrival of my purchase. Her investment and care about her products and her clients' satisfaction carries throughtout all correspondence. I'll be sending her a picture of a happy client wearing her lovely creatlion. Did I mention the beautiful attention to detail? The best! Marrianne DS

At AJ’s Aprons And More you will find affordable aprons, purses and accessories that are unique, because they are upcycled from gently used articles
Hi, thanks for stopping into AJ’s Aprons And More affordable aprons, purses and accessories storefront at Etsy. My primary studio is in Brandon, Florida, but I enjoy making my quirky creations wherever I happen to be, even Bryson City and Bangor.
Used for New
I love repurposing things into something cute and useful, especially when I am able to retain something from the original article to incorporate into the new one. It is so cool how the marriage of a famous maker western shirt and a famous maker dress can produce a variety of aprons and wine totes.
I purchase my materials anywhere I can locate quality, gently used fabrics. When I see a nice article with a suitable fabric, I contemplate its future (no patterns here) and look for complimentary trim fabric - preferably from another gently used item. I still make a small percentage of my products from new materials. Using new material is easier, but I prefer taking the old, deciding what it will be and then painstakingly deconstructing it to rework it into my vision.
About 35 years ago I was cleaning a closet one day and came across the apron one of my grandmothers had made for me in the 1950’s - the one I picture in my shop banner. Now that apron was old yet it was in great shape! The stitching was wonderful, the fabric a good quality, and the personalization – memory invoking. I thought about the quality of workmanship that went into that apron. It was the same type quality workmanship my other grandmother put into every crocheted bedspread or tablecloth. I strive for that same quality in my products.
It was endearing to know those wonderful women took so much pride in making things especially for their families. With those thoughts and memories came my inspiration. I had already been sewing since age nine making clothing and home accessories. So I thought, “Why not, I can do that for my family.” Now that was no small task as by my husband’s and my family members are numerous. I began designing aprons, pillows and other goodies for them. I worked on them all year and found I had something unique or personalized for each individual that Christmas. It also gave me great joy to think of each person as I was making their gift.
The Early Days
The next year AJ’s Aprons came to be because so many people began asking me to make specialty aprons for them to give as gifts. It was a blast. I was designing things for newborns to nannies.
One of the values my grandfather taught us was to use everything to its fullest. His was a thrifty generation and he always considered it wasteful to dispose of something when it could be useful for something else. So when something became useless for its purpose we had to rethink how to utilize it. Could it be simply used in another way OR (and most often) we had to disassemble it and use its components to create something entirely new and useful. We were being good stewards of what we had.
For years I had done the “thrifty mom” thing cutting down clothing for costumes, and putting my grandfather’s teaching into practice in many other areas of my live. But combining my Grandparents’ ideals with my love of creating things became the backbone of AJ’s Aprons.
My home has a small, multi-purpose room that became my studio, although like most artisans and craftsmen, the majority of my studio is in my head. My husband filled it – the studio that is - full of cabinets that help me stay organized and efficient. There is also a project board right above my sewing machine. The studio is smoke and pet free, but rest assured that our beloved lab has full run of the remainder of our home when she's not singing in my husbands music studio. I love having Etsy as my store front, along with a handful of small town craftsman and cigar shops also displaying my products. Most of my sales are still generated locally by word of mouth, or I should say personal sightings. I am thankful for all.
Pondering the Good
I truly believe that anything practical can still bring a smile to your heart when in use. What we use to protect our clothing, harvest veggies, or tote wine or jars of jam somewhere does not have to be somber. If I am creating something for a specific person I also ask their approximate size and what things they enjoy and their favorite colors. Personalization always makes a hand made gift special.
God has blessed me with memories of my grandparents' talents and values and it gives me great pleasure to use their ideals to bring a little sunshine to you through my products.
Please, get your coffee or tea and check out my adorable products. Thanks again for dropping in. Please feel free to convo me any time.
