From Computers to Crafts

In 2000 I had been working as a sysadmin & doing tech support for over a decade but a mystery illness had caused my health to worsen over time and my ability to handle a 9-5 job was seriously strained. I'd started doing some painting on glass and found that people liked it enough to buy it, so friends suggested that I stop trying to force myself back into an office job and start working for myself. Five years later I was taking regular commissions for handpainted glassware; making jewellery & painting landscapes in oils (also on commission at times). At about that point I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, a relief to know what the problem was but distressing to realise that there is no cure - though sometimes there can be a period of remission. Some days I can barely stand up, others I cannot sit for longer than half an hour before having to lie flat. Some days my hands shake so much that I can't pick anything up one-handed and even with both hands there's a good chance I'll drop it.

As my health fluctuates, almost on a daily basis, so does the need to change the way I work, so I have studied additional crafts and rediscovered some old skills. For example, my costume making (for SF conventions) has translated into sewing slightly simpler (smaller and less ornate!) items recently. More of which will be added to my shop soon.

I no longer take unique commissions, but am more than happy to reproduce most items from my shop in different colours, fabrics and sizes. Just ask.
