About

From Simple to Fancy - How I found my creativity and the boldness to show the world

As a child, I loved watching my mother turn old items into new ones again by painting, repurposing, cutting and gluing, etc. She taught me (totally unintentionally, I believe) that paint should not be wasted for any reason. Not even a little. This means that when one paint project is finished, any remaining paint left on the brush has to go on something else....which leads to lots and lots of painting!

After I married the man of my dreams and moved into our first house, I found myself doing the exact same thing. I can't tell you how many items in my home have about eight coats of paint on them...all different colors from different days, moods, or seasons. Occasionally the paint would even make its way onto a blank canvas, which started looking more and more like art. I considered myself to be a creative person, but for some reason the timid side of me would come out when people suggested that I start selling my own art. This idea terrified me for years, but with the sweet encouragement of my family and friends, I finally jumped in with both feet when I opened my Etsy shop over three years ago. I have not had a moment of regret since day one!

So that's how I got started on the art side of things. Let's rewind a bit to cover how I jumped into the world of jewelry making.

My creative mother and I found ourselves at a craft store sometime during my high school years with a cart full of beads. We rushed home and made a giant mess on the dining room table, and about two pieces of jewelry were made--along with a load of memories. I'm not sure what I did with the jewelry of my early years, but I somehow considered myself a jeweler deep down, even with just plastic beaded necklaces as my only claim. When I left home for college, I still dabbled in jewelry making, but typically just to fill in my own jewelry collection. I outgrew the plastic bead phase (you're welcome) and began investing in semiprecious gems and other quality supplies. I began making jewelry for friends and family as Christmas gifts, and similar to the art story above....people kept telling me that I needed to branch out and sell my jewelry to the public. Flattered by their encouragement, I was still afraid I might be unsuccessful. Well, looking at my receipts after a few splurges in jewelry supplies made me realize I either needed to stop making jewelry altogether (plan A), or I was going to have to sell it to make it worth it (plan B). Obviously, plan B was the winner, and here I am three years later with my lovely little shop, A Simple Kind of Fancy.

I often love each item I make a bit more than the one that came before it. I am constantly getting excited thinking about what I might create next. If you have a suggestion, let me know! Custom orders are my favorite, and I would love to make something just for you!
