Little Layers of Happy || An exhibition of woven textile art by Megan Walsh-Cheek

(Extract from 'The Courier' Newspaper, written by Elizabeth Sweetman)

Moss-covered twigs, fabric scraps and delicate lace form the basis of weaver Megan Walsh-Cheek's whimsical designs.

The Hahndorf resident's unique woven textile art will be on show in her first exhibition 'Little Layers of Happy', as part of the SALA (SOuth Australian Living Artists) Festival.

Opening Friday the 2nd of August at The Seasonal Garden Cafe, 'Little Layers of Happy' is the result of Megan's foray into the world of weaving, inspired by the Japanese Saori weaving tradition.

"This exhibition is the result of lots of joyful pottering around with twigs, lace and my precious reclaimed fabric stash" she said. "There is something so satisfying about creating a delicate tapestry of textures and colours, and discovering it's own little personality once the last piece has nestled in with the rest".

Using what is accessible to her, Megan works in a spontaneous manner, featuring negative space with a calm and earthy palette. "Rre-using and re-thinking the materials we already have underpins all my pieces and I wanted to extend this perspective to asset the broader community - Silvia (owner of The Seasonal Garden Cafe) takes the same approach to her advocacy for ethical food use" she said.

Megan is currently studying early childhood education with a dream to teach art as therapy for children, and said her first exhibition was a challenge she set for herself last year. Passionate about demystifying art and making it accessible to all, Megan will be holding a collaborative community weaving project throughout the duration of the exhibition until August 25. Visitors are encouraged to add their own little layers to a simple frame weaving for a donation, with proceeds going to food rescue service OZHarvest Adelaide.
