Frequently asked questions
What is Aurora Borealis

Aurora Borealis, often notated as "AB", is a tradename used to describe a kind of finish added to crystal beads. Aurora Borealis was first developed by the Swarovski company in the mid 1950s. Forever innovating their manufacturing processes to improve the quality of their crystals, they discovered a technique to increase radiance and sparkle. Crystals are coated with a thin layer of metal, which is then vaporized in a vacuum, leaving behind a shimmering rainbow finish. Named after the spectacular play of the northern lights, Swarovski's innovation quickly became a success worldwide. Today, there are a multitude of color coatings used to increase the brilliance of crystal stones, but Aurora Borealis remains a beloved and popular favorite.

What is Cubic Zirconia?

Once upon a time, diamonds came only from nature, but fortunately for jewelry makers everywhere, that is no longer the case! Cubic zirconia (sometimes abbreviated as CZ) is a laboratory-made faux diamond, made from a mixture of high purity zirconium oxide powders stabilized with magnesium and calcium. Other additives can be used to create simulated colored diamonds. Cubic zirconia is widely available at a fraction of a cost per carat one would pay for natural diamonds. Their appearance is strikingly similar, though the stone is rated slightly lower on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness than diamonds, coming in at 8.5 to 9 as compared to diamond's 10. It can have the look, clarity, and brilliance of a diamond for a fraction of the cost

What is Tigers Eye?

Tiger's eye (sometimes also written as "tigers eye" or "tiger eye") is a member of the quartz group of chalcedonies. It is one of the chatoyant gemstones, which means it has a silky luster that changes as light reflects within the thin, fibrous bands in the material. Tiger's eye is named for the striped banding of golds, browns, and blacks that appear within the stone. Roman soldiers wore tiger's eye in battle for protection as it was thought to be all-seeing. Tiger iron is an altered rock composed chiefly of tiger's eye, red jasper and black hematite.

WEDDING ANNIVERSARY: Tiger's Eye is the anniversary gemstone for the 9th year of marriage.

What is Rhodium?

Rhodium is one of the six noble or precious metals. It is rare, chemically stable and highly resistant to oxidation and corrosion. It is commonly plated on sterling silver neck chains to protect them from tarnishing. Rhodium is ideally suited for the jewelry industry. It is a sought after, long lasting and non-tarnishing finish. Its brilliant gray-white color is compatible with sterling silver and silver-plated products.

What is Rose Gold?

Rose gold is an alloy made of gold mixed with copper. Many know it for its prevalence in Black Hills Gold jewelry from South Dakota. Rose gold has seen an increase in popularity as of late, especially as a material for engagement rings. The color of rose gold varies from a pale pink to a deep blush depending on the ratios of metals in the alloy; typically rose gold is composed of 75% gold and 25% copper, but other metals such as zinc, silver, and nickel are sometimes also included.

What is Gold Plated or Silver Plated?

The process of covering a base metal with a thin film of precious metal by setting it in a chemical solution through which an electric current flows to coat it. Items treated in this way are known simply as “gold-plated” or “silver-plated”. TIP: The metal coating applied is generally only a few microns thick so care should be taken to not polish plated items too vigorously. We carry a large selection of plated beads and components, including gold-plated, silver-plated, copper-plated, and rhodium-plated.

What is Filigree?

Filigree is the term used to describe ornamental work especially of fine wire of gold, silver, or copper applied chiefly to gold and silver surfaces. Filigree can also be stamped. These intricate patterns typically resemble rosettes, spirals, or vines.

What is PVD Plating

PVD is short for “physical vapor deposition,” which is the high-temperature vacuum coating process that deposits the finish. The result is an even, superior decorative coating much thinner than other methods produce. PVD was originally used in military applications to decrease friction wear & tear on metal parts, which is a testament to its toughness & wear resistance. PVD lends a necessary hardness to delicate items like jewelry, so the items won’t warp. PVD coating also adheres well to metal & doesn’t discolor, flake or tarnish. The PVD process is safe for both the environment & humans, employing no harsh chemicals or hazardous by-products. The resulting coating is so safe that it can be used for body jewelry without any harmful effects.

What is a Rhombus cut?

A rhombus is a four-sided shape where all sides have equal length. Also opposite sides are parallel and opposite angles are equal. Another interesting thing is that the diagonals meet in the middle at a right angle. In other words they "bisect" (cut in half) each other at right angles.

A rhombus is sometimes called a rhomb or a diamond.

What is Fluorite Stone

Fluorite is considered to be one of most popular minerals in the world among gem and mineral collectors, second only to quartz. It is often referred to as 'the most colorful mineral in the world' owing to its variety of brilliant colors.

Fluorite is a highly protective and stabilizing stone, useful for grounding and harmonizing spiritual energy. When working with the upper Chakras, Fluorite increases intuitive abilities, links the human mind to universal consciousness, and develops connection to Spirit.
