About

Abracadabra!

Abracadabra became a reality during the 1973 Ann Arbor Art Fair. The small, free-spirited tree city hosts thousands of art-collecting peaceniks, creative design-it-yourself-ers, and hippies in all the colors of the rainbow every July for an enormous Art Fair encompassing downtown from the University to the Old West Side. This open-minded little tree-hugging town encouraged a young rockhounding art-school dropout from Detroit to create for the greater good.

Combining passion for unique gemstones with spiritual studies, Steven began with personalized Om pendants. As they grew in popularity, he developed the Abra process of creating jewels by hand, in conversation with the wearer. We believe that creative conversations are central to intentional design that will fit your life perfectly.

We draw inspiration from history, art, architecture, mineralogy, music, and millions of other sources. Through active listening and hand-drawn sketches, the Abra collections expanded to custom gem suites based on astrological charts, set over a rose quartz pyramid on the full moon. Birthstones that Steven mined himself, from the U.P. to Montana, featured in handmade Abra rings. We began carving custom Hebrew verse and Celtic knots motifs, and grew to using dozens of languages, cultural symbols from all over the world, and historical designs from ancient Egypt to Victorian England.

Our materials expanded to include American grown hardwoods, newly discovered materials like titanium and Fordite, and other earth-friendly materials that speak to our home in Michigan and our tree-hugging past. We've continued to learn and grow, always working closely with customers, miners, and refiners, to create meaningful, practical pieces that will last forever.

One of our favorite surprises is to welcome back an Abra couple with fond memories of designing their wedding bands, and still enjoys wearing them after decades. We love meeting granddaughters of Abra customers coming in to remount an Abra diamond, it is the highest compliment. We feature a few testimonials on our website, www.abragem.com, and we're happy to share more reviews if you'd like!

Jewelry is an art that can capture a beautiful life milestone, embody family traditions in everyday life, and remind the wearer of the truly important moments of life. With every piece, we are honored to help celebrate this moment.

The pieces in the Abra Vault are golden oldies looking for the perfect home. If you see a piece you love that is out of your range, please feel free to make an offer.
