The nature of art.

I've posted a video of the evolution of a recent painting I did. I'm a member of the Copyist Program at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. Over about a seven month period I worked on a copy of Raphael Santi's "Bindo Altoviti". Raphael has been a great teacher, as have other masters in the magnificent collection we have at the NGA. Enjoy.

Here also are some shots of my current studio. It allows me space to create in whatever medium to satisfy the need, whether prodigious or small. Often the space feels snug, yet there is great benefit, I find, in those times when I have to squeeze into circumstance. The pressure can result in unexpectedly good things...
The paintings I make are an expression of love and beauty I find in the world - reflected in our history, nature, relationships, animals, consciousness itself.
While we have exploited Mother Nature for far too long, the jewelry I make reflects the great appreciation I have for her. Stones, gems, metals, and beads have taken millions of years (in many cases) to reach maturity and fullness in their qualities. Even modest glass or wood, can bring a perfect balance to a necklace or bracelet of precious or semi precious stones. Like a community rich in diversity, when many elements come together in a conscious and special way, we all benefit. The splendor of nature comes out in an organic harmony with the person who wears these items that were made with consideration and care.
While knowing full well there is much room for me to grow and improve, I also know from experience change can be a long and rewarding process. For example I sometimes upcycle beads, and always search for more earth friendly options for materials and practices. As in most aspects of my life, I'm keenly interested in sustainable and non-toxic products and this includes for paint and framing too. I stopped using acrylic paints a long time ago, and am experimenting now with plant or mineral binders instead of animal or petroleum based ones. At this late date I feel there's not enough we can do to help protect all the beings, their habitats, the elements of earth, water, fire, air, and space and the interconnectedness and interdependence upon which all life depend. I'm far from perfect, but in my short life have reduced dramatically my negative impact and supported like-minded individuals and industries by being aware, doing lots of research, and making choices that don't weigh on my heart too heavily. I find our precious time here very short, and want to bring the most benefit while I can.
