This is my second purchase from AdornYourDoorway! I absolutely love the way these little guys look. I'll be buying another two or three soon!

About

Unique window treatments with a story

The beauty of the Philippine Eastern Visayas' natural surroundings is echoed in the shape and arrangements of origami folds found in a ~kurtina ha purtahan~. More than just an economy springs from the coconut. Bring this magical silhouette into your home with a valence across the top of a window or door.
As a volunteer assisting in the Philippines with rebuilding after the devastating super typhoon Haiyan I was taken by the pretty designs adorning doors and windows in the small rural village where I was staying. Colorful and shiny, they are made of upcycled plastic wrappers and drinking straws. People there are struggling with an ongoing economic crises due to the super-typhoon in Nov. 2013. At that time the extensive groves of coconut trees, the traditional basis of the economy, were destroyed. The level of destruction was unprecedented. In an effort to bring economic opportunity to this small community, I created Purtahan Imports to bring their craft to the United States, After spending 9 months pitching my booth at every flea market and festival that would have me I returned to Batug, in Dulag Province for intensive on site consultations. We now have a product line more suited to the modern home and internet market. I am now offering these amazing examples online with Adorn Your Doorway.
Because the cost of shipping one or two kurtinas around the world is prohibitive and because internet access is spotty in Dulag Province it is impossible for the artisans to open their own Etsy shop. Although I do not personally make the artwork, and although it is an ethnic craft I hope and pray my design guidance and application of an innovative and fair trade business model satisfies Etsy's sales policy and gains the understanding of my fellow shopkeepers.

There wonderful products are made exclusive in barangay batug, located in Dulag province on Lytey island, which is part of the Philipean Eastern Vysayians. Check it out here!
