A Goddess Awakens to a legacy of Healers and Artisans

Ever since I can remember, I have always been a sensitive, creative spirit. I was born and raised in Baltimore City but spent plenty of time in both urban and natural worlds. My Grandma had moved outside of the city by the time I was about five years old. There, I enjoyed all the open space and greenery of the suburbs as I collected bugs, visited creeks and rolled around in the grass. I have an Auntie, Titilayo, who was always very tuned in to indigenous spirituality and culture and she and her friends used to chant and meditate on the top floor of the family house. As I child, I would listen and try to sing along. I was amazed that 20 years later, I still remembered the chanting that I heard.

As time went on, I found myself quite immersed in Afrocentric and Native American cultures as both were represented in my family. As a young adult, I joined a local African Centered Rites Of Passage Program. I also attended a Native American Sweat Lodge, which was Amazing and received many messages while sweating the Grandmothers! I, later participated in a ceremony called a Birth Blessingway, as facilitated by my friend and local Midwife and Artisan Extraordinaire, YogiNilajah, in which family and community members give gifts and well-wishes to an expecting mother. As a Doula, I shared this ceremony with my clients and when I created the sacred bracelet that the mother-to-be was to wear, everyone loved it and wanted one for their very own and so my journey had begun. I started making jewelry and I sold my first piece shortly thereafter. It turns out that as a young adult, my dad made leather crafts for a living and he loved it. I came to love crafting too and was pleased to be continuing a family legacy.

AfroGoddess Adornment is my handcrafted jewelry line. They connect women to their beauty through the mystical power of indigenous heritage. They include original designs using Batik fabrics, metals, semiprecious stones and recycled leather. I say a prayer over each piece and infuse them with Reiki and positive energy. People tell me that they "feel better" when they wear my pieces. My intention is to inspire women to connect to love, beauty and the Goddess within.

My most popular and prized design, the Batik Egungun Doll Eardangle, is inspired by costumes worn by indigenous peoples worldwide. These costumes are worn to represent Ancestors or Egunun. It is believed that our elders are even more powerful once they have crossed over and are highly instrumental in protecting and guiding us.
