About

How Alaska Laser Maid came to be

I got a part time job doing cool stuff for Bill MacCannel, the owner of Alaska Laser Craft in 2003, I think, he taught me everything I know about using the laser to cut and engrave wood, stone, plastics, glass, leather, vinyl, rubber and what ever else people came into the shop for us to engrave.

In 2006, his wife got very sick and they had to go 'south' (to Washington state) and left me in charge. To make a long story short, he decided that he didn't want to live here anymore or run the shop after his wife's death... so I bought it from him and had to change the name in June 2007.

Then I had a hard time getting finished sanded wood, because the guy who did that was tired of doing it... so I bought his 13 inch wide belt sander and dust collector from him and started sanding my own boards. All the wood is mostly salvaged logs from old logging areas here on Prince of Wales Island and is milled at local family owned sawmills.

And now years later, here I am, doing everything I did when I was then, plus a whole lot of other things. My laser is at my real life shop in the town of Thorne Bay, about 12 miles from where I live. So that is where I do most of the design, laser cutting and engraving, then I take it all home with me at the end of the day and do the finishing, lacquering, put it all together and bring it back in to pack and mail out.

My inspiration comes from my surroundings for the most part and imagination and general quirkiness. Sometimes the patterns of the wood inspire something, sometimes it's artwork or seeing things and thinking, "I could do something like that!, sometimes people give me ideas, sometimes I make mistakes that turn into other things. I do have templates that I've created for runes and boxes using Corel Draw and a 35W laser. Some times I get to use my own artwork, sometimes people send me theirs, often I find awesome things at clipart place I'm subscribed to. So ask about artwork you'd like to see and I'll see what I have or can find. It is so much fun making something new and different and that is why I'm here. I love my job!

I love working with wood and creating things of beauty with my 30 watt laser cutter/engraver. Everything in this shop is created by me. While most of the images engraved on my things aren't my own original artwork, a lot of time and care go into choosing and creating images suitable for engraving.

My original designs and other artist's designs for engravable artwork can be found in the Designs and Art Prints section.

For other design ideas, I am currently uploading more graphics in the Graphic Images Album on Photobucket.

Most can be either engraved or cut out for many other applications besides box art, also glassware, garments and vinyl decals.

There are loads of examples of things I have made & can do at

Payment
Payments can be made immediately with PayPal, credit card and shipped out within a day or two of your order, if it's not a custom order.
Sometimes there are glitches and the payment process isn't completed. I will remind you if this happens, but if I don't get response or payment within 4 days of original purchase, will cancel the sale due to non-payment.

Purchases by e-check will be shipped as soon as the payment arrives and/or clears. I am sorry, but money order payments haven't worked well and will no longer accept them without prior approval. Contact me if that is your only venue.
Shipping
My business & shipping days are Monday- Thursday.

Insurance is not included in the shipping prices for international orders.. They will have limited delivery confirmation and tracking numbers.

International mail will be First Class Letter Post with a numbered Customs Declaration, so everything will have tracking numbers for delivery confirmation. IT IS NOT SENT INSURED and is AT YOUR OWN RISK!!! I can only send insured international mail at priority or express rates, so contact me first and I can adjust the postage rates to your location. Also, any customs charges are not included in the purchase price, so be prepared to pay them. If items are returned to me because they weren't picked up, I will refund the purchase price of the item, but not postage costs.

Purchases made between Thursday and Sunday won't be processed or shipped before Monday.

The mail plane comes in twice a day, 10 am and 1:30 pm, so when I drop off mail in the afternoon, the package won't actually leave until the next morning, weather permitting.
Please note this is coming from an island in Southeast Alaska, our mail comes & goes by float plane, which is weather related, sometimes the planes can't fly for days, so will take at MINIMUM of 4-7 days to get there, even if it's sent priority.

***Custom orders will be shipped within two weeks of your order, depending on the state of my supplies and if I have to make more boards or order special items, such as glassware.
Refunds and Exchanges
I have a 30-day refund/return policy. Report any damages or defects for refund or exchange as soon as you get your package, mail the item back to me, refunds & return postage will be reimbursed upon receipt of the returned item.

I don't do perfect, but I do strive for excellence. Keep in mind the wood has it's on characteristics and there are characters running the sawmills that cut this. They try really hard to meet my specifications and sometimes no amount of sanding can remove the marks left by saw blades and still have a board thick enough to use. I try to avoid those spots, but sometimes it's unavoidable. Wood by it's very nature is going to have different things going on, I try to bring out the beauty and use it to highlight the items I create and maintain it's strength and integrity... but sometimes I miss something.
Additional policies and FAQs
My goal is to give you quality goods and am happy to customize most of my products to suit your needs, tho' I reserve the right to refuse if the customizing involves copyright infringement, pornographic or down right feels wrong.
I guarantee that I put my best into each and every product, I can't guarantee perfection tho'.

Care for your wooden products:
Use a soft clean cloth and follow the directions on furniture oil or polish. Sometimes the oil will really make the engravings jump right off the box, it does help. Just be very careful not to rub too hard or it can break off bits of delicate illustration type engravings.

Thanks for reading this.

Rune sets are sets, I don't sell mix and match runes or break sets up. Boxes are another matter, if you want just the box, let me know and I'll make one for you without the runes included.

If you want an individual rune, contact me, I have extras on hand.
