The power of light

Albedo Mosaic Art was inspired by our love of light and color. We love how light effects color and how color effects light. Whether it's summer sunlight, the cold harsh light reflecting off snow, the dim light of dawn, or the light of a full moon, color needs light. That's why we chose albedo for our name. Albedo, a scientific term, is the ratio of reflective light to incident light.

Why mosaics? We both appreciate flat surface art, JoAnne is a painter by training, Anne is a photographer. We wanted to explore sculpture, texture and the effect of light over multiple and changing surfaces. When we discovered mosaics, we realized that it is a mixture / hybrid of one dimensional art and sculpture - the best of both worlds. We love its unique and musical voice.

An important element of mosaics is andamento: the flow and rhythm of individual tesserae (the small pieces that make up a mosaic) as they play and work together on the surface of a mosaic piece. In other words, a mosaic, like music, is composed of individual tesserae (notes) placed in a deliberate way or rhythm that results in a unique melody or composition, much like a piece of music - a sonata, concerto, symphony, etc. We have played musical instruments since childhood; we find music in our artform, perhaps it has always been there, now uncovered, discovered.

Lastly, we are identical twins.

I am inspired by light, water, wind and music. Love the expression that mosaics provide, the hybrid of one dimensional flat with three dimensional sculpture, resulting in the best of both worlds.

Trained as a painter, JoAnne is now getting her hands dirty with mosaics. She continues to paint, explore the abstract and work outside the box of a canvas.

Welcome to Albedo Mosaic Art! We're happy you stopped by our site to visit and browse our selection of wearable mosaic art and stained glass style lighting. We are always adding new designs, so stop by often!

What is Albedo? Albedo is a scientific term defined as the refraction of the sun’s radiation reflected from a surface -- light's reflective power. In short, we’re talking about light as it passes through or over glass, stone, and other surfaces.

At Albedo Mosaic Art we create individual wearable works of art and stained glass style lighting using traditional mosaic-making techniques that include the hammer and hardie method of stone and glass cutting. Our designs echo stained glass, ancient mosaic floors and wall art, and the Earth’s natural elements, water, ice, stone, sand, etc.

Our use of recycled and repurposed glass and stone is essential to our art and to our creative philosophy. Our mosaic pieces are composed of a variety of substances that include recycled glass, sea glass, crash glass, metal, pebbles, beads, smalti (handmade glass mosaic tile used in the traditional mosaics of medieval and Renaissance Europe), sea shells, and anything else that sparks our creativity. Unique to our designs is what we call spun glass: new and recycled glass that we tumble to a shimmery sensual smoothness. The results are stunning both visually and tactilely.

Albedo Mosaic Art is located in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Our cold winters make us long for sunny skies, warm moon lit nights and the feel of our jewelry on bare skin. We hope our mosaic creations will warm your heart and lighten your soul.
