About

"Color and the effect of light are central to my painting and the envelope of light itself is often my subject matter. Over the past decade I have been in plein air events in California, Colorado, Montana, Texas, Wisconsin and Wyoming. I hope you enjoy looking through my paintings."
--Alfredo

About the artist
Alfredo Tofanelli is a Northern California native who also spent more than a decade in Southern California. His passion for art grew at a young age and he started entering art competitions as a junior in high school. He studied photo realism from his successful high school and junior college instructor/painters who were having successful one man shows in New York city. He was accepted to Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California where he earned a BFA in Illustration. He was fortunate to study under some great painters like Dan McCaw, John Asaro, Craig Nelson, Peter Liashkov and many more. He started plein air painting in 1979 off the coast north of Long Beach and Malibu and off the San Francisco Bay. Alfredo taught at Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design for a decade before moving north to San Francisco. Alfredo loved painting alla prima from the model in the studio to plein air painting in the open air. After moving to San Francisco he spent the next five years in the entertainment industry working mostly as an art director at The 3DO Company and Electronic Arts. The beauty in nature drew him back to work as a fine artist where he has focused on painting since around 2003. Between 2007 and 2011 he traveled around the country painting in various plein air events where he received numerous awards. In 2009 he won Best of Show at the Biennial Plein Air competition at the Napa Valley Museum. That earned him a Solo Exhibition in 2010 in the main exhibit hall and again in the 2011 in the smaller downstairs gallery.
