The Threadwear Story

I grew up creating, making things out of whatever was at hand. I've been a painter, sculptor, potter, but throughout my life, I've always continued to sew, savoring the experience of re-imagining scraps of fabric into something new.

AliYoThreadwear is a continuation of my passion for creating, for the challenges of problem solving and for the excitement of making something unique, yet practical and wearable.

Thanks to the internet, I discovered Katwise, and the joy of repurposing sweaters into coats and jackets. I will be eternally grateful to her to sharing her craft.

Additional policies and FAQs

Is everything really made from repurposed/upcycled sweaters?

Do you do custom orders?
Too stressful. I hate saying no when a friend or some other nice person asks, so please, please, spare me the pain of declining your request.

Do you do any shows?
Right now, I do a few shows a year in and around Central New York in the Summer and Fall. I always post upcoming shows on my Facebook page:

Why don't you make more coats and jackets?
I'd like to, but I am a stickler for quality. I spend a lot of time constructing each garment: basting, sewing, and hand finishing. No coat or jacket leaves my workroom until I am totally satisfied with the design and construction.

I'm allergic to wool, do you ever use cotton or synthetic sweaters?
Even though wool sweaters are becoming increasingly hard to find, I love creating with wool and find that other fibers don't work as well for what I do. Occasionally, I may use a sweater with a very small percentage of other fibers, but I try to stick to wool and cashmere sweaters only.

Can I wash my new jacket or coat?
Although I wash and slightly " felt" (shrink) sweaters prior to using them, some sweaters have a bad habit of continuing to shrink each time they're washed, even in cold water. Sometimes a good airing, or spot cleaning with a damp cloth, might be all you need. Otherwise, I highly recommend dry cleaning and cannot be responsible for any shrinkage that may occur if a garment is washed.

I have severe pet allergies, are there dogs or cats in your household?
We are a dog-friendly home and have two friendly dogs. Although they don't visit my workroom, they're an important part of my life.
