Artist Statement
Alice’s work marries highly detailed decorative imagery with the organic characteristics of handmade pottery. The surface imagery is comprised of multiple layers of screen-printed, and hand painted imagery. The screens are made from her original drawings, and are inspired by interior design, and nature, more specifically the home and garden. Embellished wallpaper, damask and Ikat fabric patterns and British Georgian architectural elements are all harmoniously intermingled with floral and animal motifs into her designs. The surfaces of her work are illustrative by nature, but contain only an implied narrative.

Process:
Clay is rolled into thin slabs, the screen prints are applied in various layers and compositions using colored slips and under glazes. Once the printed composition is complete, the clay is hand built into the desired form. The work is then glazed and fired at cone 6 in oxidation, and is food, dishwasher and microwave safe.

Bio
Alice Drew is a full time studio potter and ceramic product designer living in the South End of Boston with her husband and three children.

Every piece I make is unique. If you see something that you like, but has already been sold, please contact me to place a special order. Most commissioned work will take 3-4 weeks to ship. Time frame may vary depending on the size of the order.
My work is food safe, dishwasher and microwave safe. Some pieces may have gold luster on them, and therefore they should not be placed in a microwave.

Surface and Technique
The surface technique used throughout this body of work is a modern form of silk-screening, called Thermal Screen Printing. The screen prints are made from photocopies of my original drawings, using a Thermo-fax machine.

Each piece is hand built using slab construction. The clay is rolled in to thin slabs; the prints are applied in various compositions and colors using colored slips. The clay is then assembled into the desired form. The work is fired at 2194F, and is food, dishwasher and microwave safe.
