Announcement   TMy name is Allison Funk, and I am a native of Staunton, Virginia. I earned my Bachelors degree in Psychology and Studio Art from the College of William & Mary in 2014. My preferred medium is Woodblock Printmaking, but I also work with ceramic sculpture, watercolor, and several other materials. As much of my work displays, I am intrigued and inspired by unique shadow patterns, reflection, and deeply emotional, dark imagery.
Artist Statement: My body of work is a collective study of reflection, both literally and psychologically. The sculptures and images that I create portray emotion through mark, gesture, and form. I work from highly considered setups for meaningful and symbolic compositions, most often involving the human figure. My woodcuts and drawings are energetic through vigorous marks, and are intended to create an emotional ambience. The sculptures I create are highly gestural, some with emphasis on heightened states of emotion. The majority of my pieces are created in a serial manner. This juxtaposition of images and forms elevates the emotional energy and intensity of the individual pieces and the work as a whole. Overall, my body of work is intended to evoke the concept of self-reflection and to create a relationship between the viewer and subject – either through empathy or through an emotional likeness. I strive to portray the darkness of my inspirations while simultaneously bringing to light the captivating beauty that exists within their struggles.
