About

Before the beginning of great brilliance there must be chaos!

A fortune cookie told me that.... and it was right!

Alvina Zazel, my alter ego, was born out of my love for the life stories of circus performers, Coney Island, my life in NYC, glitter and glamour.

I've always loved the imagery of the circus and Coney Island.... I painted the Wonder Wheel several times before I ever saw it in person! The character of Alvina Zazel was inspired by the life of Lillian Leitzel, a very famous aerialist in the circus. The concept behind my brand, that Alvina is making handbags out of fabric left over from making costumes, combines my sense of humor, love of vintage fashion and admiration for all things audacious to produce something I like to call "Elegant Camp".

As a New Yorker and expatriate Californian, my handbag has become as important to me as my car used to be. I need my bag to be trustworthy and help keep my chaotic life organized. I need it to be beautiful and a pleasure to carry as well. Alvina Zazel is all about combining those elements in a fabulous, glamorous over the top way!

My process is really sort of organic. I look for shapes that I like and apply them to fabrics and textures that inspire me. Many of my bags are based on handbags I've owned and loved in the past then constructed with a special Alvina twist. (An extra pocket here, a bit of sparkle there...) I often use fabrics that are in limited supply. I'll buy several yards at a time but when I use it all, it's really gone - making many of my bags limited editions.

Over the years I've worn numerous hats in order to bring home the bacon. I've worked in retail, tended bar. For the last several years I've had the pleasure and privilege of working in paper and book conservation. I've long been looking for a way to combine my working world skills with my art making skills in order to bring something uniquely my own to the world. When Alvina Zazel sprang to life I definitely knew what that something could be!
