Face Masks, Tape Measures, Quilt Patterns & Books

Top shop for gifts.

A buyer bought a gift from this shop and gave it a 5-star review!

Announcement    Hello and Welcome! My name is Ami. It's pronounced AH-mee and it rhymes with salami. I'm so glad you found my Etsy shop. I am a quilter, but I sew other things too. That's why you see face masks, crochet-covered tape measures, a jacket pattern, and one of my best inventions --- a work surface for hand sewing that has pockets for all your tools and a lid that zips shut for complete portability.

What's the common thread here? An overabundance of ideas, and a firm belief that you should do what makes you happy. I specialize in not specializing. Apparently, I never met a good idea that I didn't want to chase after. It works for me. I am never bored and I can't wait to get up in the morning.

I personally create every item in my shop myself. Whatever it is, I made it. And I think you need it. Maybe even two of them. (One for a close friend?) I am either very optimistic, or perhaps slightly delusional, to think that everybody gets as jazzed about my creations as I do. I apologize in advance for my unbridled enthusiasm.

As you poke around my studio please note that some things are ready for your immediate enjoyment. They are finished objects. Other items offer delayed gratification. You will be purchasing a pattern with instructions for something you will make yourself.

I live in Flint, Michigan in a padded house. There are quilts everywhere. I am supervised by an adoring husband who gently reminds me to eat, and a very white-faced Golden Retriever named Scooter who reminds me to feed him.

WORK HOURS
I answer emails and Etsy notifications at least once every 24 hours. And, since few things are "made to order" I tend to ship out whatever you've purchased very quickly.

~ ♥ ~ Thank you for supporting the Ami Simms Quilt Studio with your purchase. It only encourages me. And for that I am grateful.

About AmiSimmsQuiltStudio

Sales 140
On Etsy since 2018

I'm happiest when I am making something.

My first project was a Superman outfit for the cat, complete with cape, hat, and tail cozy. Not bad for a 6th grader. After the scratches healed, I switched to making outfits for my troll dolls. (Appropriately sized fabric rectangle, two holes, and you're done.) Knitting, crochet, embroidery, macrame, and dressmaking came next. In college I took ceramics, and made things from old jeans. "Recycle" had not yet made it into the lexicon back then. Upcycle was still a long way off.

In the summer of my junior year an Amish woman showed me how to quilt. I graduated from college with a degree in anthropology, went on to get a teaching certificate, and taught second graders for several years. I loved it. In my spare time I made quilts. I was devastated when declining enrollment forced me out of the classroom. Then I turned my quilting hobby and my teaching skills into a new career and never looked back. For 30+ years I traveled around the country teaching people how to quilt. I also wrote 9 books and dozens of patterns. My quilting took me to the White House as a participant in the Art in Embassies program. I created both the Worst Quilt in the World Contest and the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative.

I retired at the end of 2017. Apparently it didn't stick. I became un-retired sometime before the end of 2018. Welcome to my Etsy shop! I still love to create, and I love to share, and I love to teach. I'm so glad you're here!

I invite you to poke around. My creative journey still refuses to take a straight path. I delight in following my fancy and indulging artistic expression that is often not very "quilty." Such was the case with retractable tape measures with crocheted covers. That started very innocently and now I can't seem to stop making them. Ditto with the face masks. When the pandemic struck, Valli Schiller and I created the Valami Face Mask. We couldn't not help out. To date I have made and donated more than 450 masks, as has Valli.

I have a slew of new things to share with you, both ready-made items and patterns. "Favorite" my shop and you'll be among the first to learn about them. Just click the heart in the upper left corner above my shop name. You will have to register, but there are benefits to registering. Many shops offer discount codes to registered users. Similarly, when you see a specific item that you really really like, hover your mouse over the photograph of the item and a heart will appear there too. Make it a favorite and you'll be able to find it again! It will pop up every time you sign in to Etsy. You know what's also cool about that? I get a notification when someone makes my shop or one of my items a favorite. It's a great feeling! I smile from ear to ear. (So thanks in advance.)

Frequently asked questions
Can I have my purchase shipped to a friend?

Yes, absolutely! Enter your friend's address in the shipping area during check out. Mark the item as a gift so you can write a note to go with it. (And that will let me know too.)

If you're buying one of my books, I would be delighted to inscribe and autograph it for your friend.

Can you ship to multiple addresses? (I buy something for friend AND something for myself.)

You can only specify one address per order.

If you're buying several items from me and want to designate that items be sent to different addresses, you will need to purchase the items separately.

Do you sell to quilt shops? How about guilds?

Yes, but only for some items. Best to message me and ask. Tell me what items interest you.

I'm having trouble with a pattern, what should I do?

1. Read the ENTIRE pattern before you start.
2. Read the part you don't get OUT LOUD.
3. If it's still not clear, message me and I'll help you as much as I can.

Please note: If you decide not to follow the directions (you change the proportions, make supply substitutions, or do a certain part "your own way") I can't help you.
