About

Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This

First, let me explain the name,
1. "Ami" is "Crocheted or Knitted"
It comes from the term "Amigurumi", the name for small, cute, crocheted toys and dolls.
2. "Michy" is ... me :)
My name is Michal, my nickname is Michy.
And together, you get "Amichy" :)

So let me tell you my story and why I am here:
I have been enjoying many forms of arts and crafts ever since I can remember. Since childhood, artwork has always been the best way for me to communicate with the world and with myself, something that starts deep within and forms its way out with a magnificent array of color and texture.
But… I grew up in a home were the arts were overlooked; it was all about education, getting a job and earning some cash. My creative self was pushed a side and silenced and I focused on my studies.
12 years ago, in my twenties, while studying for my BSc in Mathematics at Tel-Aviv University, I got mysteriously ill… I went to many doctors and tried different treatments but nothing worked and I was in so much pain… After many months of fighting the illness, studying and working hard in my IT computing job, I realized what was happening. I was living a life totally different than the one I should be living. The lack of self-expression in the ways that were natural to me was causing my body to rebel.
I left school, one class before finishing my degree, changed position in my job and started doing tasks that were so much more creative and got very successful, but more importantly – got back to crafting! I learned new crafts, started enjoying my new life. And the illness? It was gone! My doctor at the time was shocked, and I just smiled and kept on with the fun. I understood that healing is all about having the courage to be who you really are, to do what you love and not what you are expected to do, ignore negative criticism and to open your heart to the gifts you have been given since birth.
I felt that I opened the door to joy.
But, in life, everything happens for a reason…
In time, I found myself focusing on two forms of art – crochet and photography. Suddenly I found that the technical tools and experience I gained in my studies and job trainings enabled me not only to create but also to give to others - not only take photographs, I can teach photography! Not only crochet toys, but to design them and write up instructions for others to use! I can actually spread the joy… what a satisfying life!
This is how Amichy shop was born.
This is my dream, to be able to make my life (and hopefully, one day, quit the day job and make a living :) ) by:
Creating + Giving others the tools to create = my HAPPINESS & JOY!

So why Crochet?
I love many arts and crafts; I used to go to many classes and spent most of my time outside, taking photos and going to workshops.
Then, I became a mom.
The little treasure that I was so blessed with, my amazing little girl, made me want to create something from home, so I could spend as much time with her as I can and I wanted to do something for her, to make her happy, to have for life as “something from mommy”. Plus, through her, I experienced life as a little girl myself again, and found the magic in all things sweet, cute and colorful.
While looking for that special thing, I found my teacher, Naomi Pour, gave her a call and… surprise! An Amigurumi crochet beginner’s class was starting the following week! Two weeks later… I was hooked :)
In the years that passed since then, I made hundreds of dolls and toys, almost all of them are loved and cared for by my girl, and also found I can design and write my own patterns. It was just meant to be :)

Amichy is a '"one woman show":
I design my toys myself, make all my creations by hand, write my own patterns, photograph all the photos you see in the shop and in the patterns, I design all my banners myself. ALL me :) so Amichy is really in my heart and soul.

My creation process:
1. Finding inspiration. The world of children is my inspiration. A new toy can be inspired by a movie or TV show I watch with my little girl, characters from coloring books, stickers or children books, animals we see at the ZOO, stories she thinks of… anything can spark an idea.
2. The drawing board. After a character comes to life in my mind with its own special personality, I put it down on paper.
3. Then… the mathematics starts. Row after row is calculated and written down in a special notebook.
4. The initial crochet work. I make the toy according to the instructions I’ve written down, fix what’s need to be fixing, take photographs, print it up and create the PDF pattern file.
5. I make another toy with the finished pattern to make sure all is correct and accurate.
This is the journey from an idea to a finished sweet creature.
