The ring created by Robert is an exquisite piece. The detailed design is exact, innovative and catches the light in a fantastic way. I've received so many compliments on my ring. Thank you, Robert, for all your talents.
Ancient arts made wearable jewelry.
Canadian born jewelry designer Robert Sekulovich has from the earliest times been fascinated by art and archaeology which he subsequently studied at the University of Toronto. Not content to admire ancient art in the context of museums nor in art books, he began in his teens to collect.... small inexpensive pieces at first, but later more and more ambitiously, concentrating on ancient coins and antiquities. His collection now includes thousands of pieces-- many, rarities and always, as he likes to say guided by his eye first, pocketbook later…
While in graduate school he moved to New York City to broaden his horizons. After several years as a writer and journalist he was searching for another avenue for his talents when for the umpteenth time a friend admiring his collection remarked on how beautiful some of his coins would look in jewelry. Initially little disposed to even consider putting such survivors of the ages at risk, he by degrees softened his response. If for example, the coins could be carefully molded and painstaking reproductions made and set in jewelry, what harm would be done to the originals? And so the concept for the Minor Ancient Arts Collection was born.
Enrolled at the Cecilia Bauer Jewelry Institute in Manhattan, and working closely under the founder, he soon acquired not just the usual jewelry making skills, but an understanding of ancient techniques and processes such as fine gold granulation, in which Ms. Bauer is a renowned expert. In just a few years Mr. Sekulovich felt ready to launch his own line, which is now in its eighteenth year, having shown at Fragments Gallery in Soho, and sold at prestigious locations across the country, from Fifth Avenue to Rodeo Drive. We are now pleased to offer the fruits of this talented jeweler on Etsy.
In a newer development, Mr. Sekulovich is now choosing attractive pieces of the most common issues of ancient coinage, (some much more common than might be imagined, existing to this day in their hundreds of thousands of examples!). It must be remembered that though certainly fine art in miniature, these coins were once money which circulated over large areas of the ancient world, some originally struck in the millions… For these coins he carefully creates settings in 18k or 22k gold which do not in the least degree harm the coins (which at some future date could be easily removed to rejoin a collection unscathed) and which will actually help protect the coins during wear. Such is the respect the jeweler has for these tiny gem-like survivors. For a listing of these originals in jewelry please contact the artist.
Finally, Mr. Sekulovich has begun to branch out and is now creating more and more new models based loosely on ancient art but with a modern twist, such as his lustrous Viking Dragon pendant shown in this collection.
