About

The Art of Andrew Shows

Andrew arrived in New Mexico in 1972, carrying with him a BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art. Then he earned an MA in sculpture from New Mexico Highlands University. From 1974-1977 he taught art at Pinehill Navajo School in western New Mexico. In 1977 he moved to Old Town Albuquerque to open his first gallery named "Sitting Bull Slept Here."
Andrew's paintings and sculptures have been exhibited by art galleries throughout the United States and Canada and are found in many private collections. In 1983 he was awarded a commission from the city of Albuquerque "Art in Public Places" program to construct a steel sculpture of his 66' long, fabricated, plumed serpent, "Kolowisi," which is the largest sculpture in the state. It was placed at 8th and Lomas in downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico, and has delighted people ever since.
When asked to describe his paintings, Andrew says: "I am attempting to regenerate the still, formal images of the past through color and bring them into the present to be looked on with fresh eyes. I try to communicate through compassion and insight the difficulty of the human situation, particularly the native people of the Southwest as they struggle to survive in this changing world."
Shows continues to live in New Mexico, where he cherishes the richness of the people and the land that brought him here over 40 years ago. It is still an inspiration to his work. His love affair with the pink mountains, the azure sky and the golden sunsets is everlasting.
