Hope is the thing with feathers...
Although my work is now primarily a mixture of print, photography and artists books, I have explored and experimented with several media before arriving at this point. My initial degree in Design facilitated this experimentation and also gave me a good training in the use of wood, plastic and metals in the making of objects.
I started working in print when I did my MA at UWE, Bristol. I did my first book binding course at UWE in 2006 and it has become a bit of an addiction. Making Artists Books satisfies my strong craft urges, while also allowing me to continue with print and photography.
Another course in home made rubber stamps lead to a secondary addiction. The process is very similar to lino printing but instead of cutting into lino you use a block of rubber and stamp the image by hand. You can see some images of the process here:
The photo shows me standing in front of Glencar Waterfall in Sligo, Ireland, which tells you two things about me. Where I am from and that I love poetry, especially WB Yeats. I use poetry as inspiration for my work, mainly Emily Dickinson. I first read her poetry in school many years ago and have loved it ever since.
I have always had an interest in birds and wildlife but it was strengthened by an experience with an abandoned gull chick that I ended up raising about 10 years ago. Then birds started to appear in my artwork and soon they were everywhere! My favourite Emily Dickinson poem become both my motto and my mantra “Hope is thing the with feathers”. I hope you like what you see. Thank you for stopping by.
