Handmade from the soul...

I hardly remember a time when I wasn't trying to make something. Fortunately, my mother taught me to hand sew and embroider at 7. Of course, growing up "in my day" and in a small Midwestern town, we did not have all of the supplies that are currently available. In middle school, I made my first purse out of a pair of old blue jeans. Although I loved this creative side, I pursued a more academic road, attending medical school and eventually trained as a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist. Out of necessity (as a poor medical student), I borrowed an old black Singer sewing machine (with a short in the foot) and taught myself by making curtains and altering my clothes. I then bought my first machine (at clearance sale) and within months I was redesigning patterns. I sewed both fashion and home decor whenever time would allot. Later, I would sew for my children and friends. As lives are apt to do, mine has taken a number of turns. I found myself without the time or space to sew for a number of years. Strangely enough, it was necessity that once again brought me back to sewing. I had purchased a number of purse organizers and could not find one that withstood daily use or had the features I wanted. I decided to design and make my own. After a few prototypes, people were requesting them. I also tried my hand at redesigning and designing purses. I later developed a yoga bag when I could not find one to accommodate my large Jade mat and all of my "stuff." My husband started to encourage me to start my own business and even came up with the name, Angela's Accents. All along I was working a very demanding manager's position in state government. After 9 1/2 years in this position, I finally decided to follow my own advice and pursue my own dreams. This was a daunting and absolutely frightening prospect and I could not have taken this leap without the loving support of my family and friends. Much to everyone's surprise (mine included), I began Angela's Accents with painting, reupholstering, and even making some furniture. The idea of taking something destined for the landfill and making it not only beautiful but useful again was so appealing. Working with fabric again also reignited my love for sewing and design. After a number of months, I began sewing bags again. I often redesign existing patterns to make them more functional and/or improve on the finishes. I also have original designs and have a number in development at this point. (Stay tuned). In most cases, the fabrics I use are very durable and are washable. I believe in quality and don't take shortcuts. I, myself, am still using my own prototypes that are several years old and they still show little to no wear. Additionally, I bring a love of color and sometimes the unexpected to pieces. Whether painting, building, or sewing, in everything I create, there is a little piece of my soul. I love learning and applying new techniques, so this is just the beginning of a new venture for me and my work.
