Prepare to be transported when you open this book: from your couch you will travel through time, to the French Alps, and through the world’s art museums. As lovely as those journeys are, they are not the most important reason to read Bazriel. Underneath the beauty of its art and the charm of its story, the book poses two related questions: what happens when we seek to help one other creature? And will we have the courage to do so? Rarely has the butterfly effect or contingency (call it what you will) been so lovingly depicted, whether you are five or fifty. This is one of the most layered books I have read in years, and I closed it reluctantly, but as if I had become a better person just by reading it.

The book is fabulous in every way. The story is delightful, the artwork gorgeous & a real labor of love by including all the high quality images of world class paintings. It’s an education in art as well as a beautiful & sweet holiday story for the whole family. The printing & hard cover are very high quality & the book just feels good in the hands. This will become my family’s favorite holiday book to read and look forward to every year. A lovely book all around!

This book has so much going for it. The story is intriguing, beautiful, and well-told; it is fast-paced, but also loving and gentle. Pringle Franklin's well-developed characters--like real humans--have strengths, weaknesses, and their own quirky personalities. The book has works of art on almost every page that add emotion and clarity to the story's gist. Add the biblical references and Pringle's spirituality and you have a cornucopia of sensory cues to augment the actual words. The story is a delight from beginning to end. I highly recommend this book for children of all ages, and for any time of the year.
