Laurie Sharkus - Clay Sculpture & Tile

Newport, Michigan

Announcement    I create hand built clay sculptures and tiles inspired by my love for animals and the natural world. Each one of my sculptures is made from clay using slab, coil & pinch hand building methods. They are fired in my kilns using various firing modes, electric, primitive smoke or wood firing. Many surface treatments are explored; glazes, terra sigs, stains or acrylic patina. All of my tiles are hand pressed in a mold made by me from an original sculpted relief tile. I paint many layers of under glazes before the first firing, more colors are painted on along with a clear matte covering glaze before the final firing.

Thank you Laurie! This sculpture of the "Arctic Emperor" is a true masterpiece. The craftsmanship and beauty of the piece is truly astounding. Everyone who sees it comes to a halt, stares... and smiles! It is a real treasure and I am very grateful to have him in my home. I am a fan for life and hope to fill my house with your heartwarming creatures! I'd also like to thank you for the packaging. You put and much care and attention into the packaging as you do in your art.

This marvelous polar bear lives with me now, and I couldn't be more pleased! Laurie's work is absolutely stunning. Her technique is confident and highly accomplished, and the work is sensitive and insightful, showing the respect, esteem, and deep affection she has for our animal friends. She clearly does regard them as friends at some level. On a more mundane note, the transaction went without a hitch; Laurie's communication was prompt and clear, the packing of this breakable piece was excellent, and the shipping was fast. VERY highly recommended!

'I aspire to create animals that embody beauty & peacefulness'

I have been sculpting and drawing since childhood, animals always being my favorite subject. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree and studied art in Florence, Italy for 6 weeks. Each one of my sculptures is an original work of art, hand sculpted, no molds are used. Each tile or mask is hand pressed in a mold made by me from an original sculpted relief. I love drawing and carving fine details in leather hard clay. After drying, my pieces are fired in my electric kiln, then I decide to use one of three finishing methods; I am currently using 3 firing modes; Electric, primitive smoke & wood firing. I built my own small wood burning kiln. I am learning glaze chemistry, making and testing slips, terra sigs, stains & glazes. Many surface treatments are explored, including acrylic patinas to achieve the finish I envision. These exciting new techniques offer unlimited possibilities of experimentation and discovery. Please feel free to ask me how the sculptures or tiles are created and I will be happy to explain the methods used.
