Announcement
It is hard to believe I have been supporting myself for the last 39 years making quilts that use color, fabric and the traditions of quilt making to create abstract landscapes and impressions of mood and feeling. Constantly I am coming up with more designs and colors than I have time to explore and still go to my studio almost every day eager to begin sewing.
There I am inspired by the wonderful vistas looking across the Deerfield River to the nearby mountain as eagles catch fish, the arches of the Bridge of Flowers reflect in the water and the village of Shelburne Falls beckons. Even the new building is a delight to work in.
Indeed my current quilts reflect those sweeping views of the river as I create dancing circles of light and color. And yet because of the intense detail in the work, it is also contemplative and calming. Always those I am pushing myself to create new designs and colors while retaining work that looks like my quilts.
I hope you will enjoy looking at some of my latest works. I do all my work in my studio in Shelburne Falls, MA. Please drop by and visit me if you happen to be in the area. I welcome custom orders--do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

5 out of 5 starsIt was appreciated as intended--driving Montana plains, as dawn was warming the sky. Fabrics felt tightly woven, and they liked the colors.

Red sun--how large the sun is against the horizon. I made this quilt by piecing & quilting thin strips of cotton fabric.
Abstract contemporary quilts that explore landscapes of the imagination.
I never can remember a time when I was not surrounded by quilts. When I was born my grandmother made for me a postage stamp quilt made from feed sack cloth. For her, quilts were a way to create beauty against the hard life of a farmer's wife. She even made a quilt for the closet of the guest bedroom--it was too good to ever be used but still she had to show everyone what she was capable of making.
Needless to say, I never thought I could make a quilt although I made all my own clothes, costumes for the high school musicals and anything else I could imagine. After graduating from high school though I realized I was not wearing the clothes I liked to sew and put my sewing machine away and became a lawyer. I had my own business doing research for other lawyers and must have driven everyone crazy since to create the arguments necessary to win a case, I would cut and paste the paragraphs on my living room floor.
Eventually I had a roommate who made quilts and I realized if I made quilts I could buy fabric. Soon I ran out of friends to give them to and started selling my quilts. I moved to a cabin in the woods of western Massachusetts and decided to teach myself to make the quilts I wanted to create.
For the past 34 years I have been supporting myself making and selling my quilts. My work is in several museums and public and private collections including the American Museum of Craft + Design, the People's Place Quilt Museum, Surdna Foundation, the Lodge at Turning Stone in Verona, NY and the new Federal District Court House in Springfield, MA. I have received grants from the Massachusetts Artist Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEfFA) and an Award of Excellence from the American Craft Council at the Baltimore Craft Show.
Throughout this time I have remained true to my belief that everyone deserves the right to own a piece of art. While I do design and make a constantly changing series of quilts that explore the landscapes around me and vistas of my imagination, I also have a line of smaller items including potholders, eyeglass cases, table runners and placemats. I try to put the same degree of care and attention to detail in these pieces.
In 2011 I lost my studio in Shelburne Falls as a result of Hurricane Irene. Luckily I was able to re-establsih myself again in a rental space and also continue to do a number of juried fine craft shows. I am currently rebuilding my space at its original location.
Please enjoy my shop and don't hesitate to contact me if you need particular colors or sizes or if you want to find out if my studio will be open.
