Extraordinary beauty of the everyday.

I have been painting all my life, finding inspiration in the rich the tapestry of natural and man-made artifacts of the Jersey Shore. I love the boardwalks, beaches and old shore homes with their patina of memories and vacations gone by.

Vibrant colors and details are used to capture the unique character of my subjects in watercolor and oil paintings. I describe my style as "Natural Realism" and find extraordinary beauty in the everyday world that surrounds us.

To create the glowing colors of my oil paintings, I start with a contrasting underpainting - cool violet-blue painted beneath the warm sand and shells, or a rich russet-red underpainting beneath the vivid blue skies and water. This underpainting adds depth and vibrance. The paintings are completed "alla prima" which means the paint stays wet as I work. Many of the colors are mixed on the canvas to stay fresh and bright.

My watercolors draw on a lifetime of practice and a variety of skills. The vibrant colors are created through multiple layers of transparent watercolor paint. The complicated compositions are built in stages and require careful planning and execution. Glazing, washes, masking, wet and dry brush techniques are combined to create realistic paintings filled with light and life.

One of my favorite places to paint is Island Beach State Park on the barrier island of New Jersey. Its twelve miles of natural dunes, maritime forest, marshlands and shoreline harbor a wealth of native plants and wildlife on this sliver of land between the Atlantic Ocean and the Barnegat Bay. Many of its most beautiful vistas can only be seen by kayak. There one can witness the changes in season and weather as if the shore had never felt the footprints of man.

I began my studies as a teenager at the Bay Head, NJ studio of renowned painter Earl Tyler. After earning a B.A. in Fine Art from Douglass College I studied portraiture with Daniel Greene and Nelson Shanks.

My work has been featured in books and magazines by Jersey Shore Publishing including “Down the Shore Once More" Volumes Two and Three, and “Long Beach Island Rhapsody.”
