Announcement   Welcome to AnnMadeArt. We're so glad to have you visit our shop!

Ann-Made environmental, eco-chic jewelry has taken off like we never expected. Not only is the jewelry chic and beautiful but they also make wonderful conversation pieces. I'm very proud to say that a portion of the proceeds from each sale is donated to environmental and social causes. Not only do we get to wear something beautiful but also do something wonderful for the earth too! How much better can it get?

We are also very proud to announce our award of the gold level Green America Seal of Approval for social and environmental responsibility.

The bracelets are lightweight, extremely durable and will express your commitment to recycling and a cleaner planet. They are woven with elastic for a stretchy, one-size-fits-most, no clasp fit. Comfortable beyond belief. Each tab is washed, hand-selected and polished. So much in such a little package.

The earrings are also extremely comfortable to wear...light as a feather and will catch lots of attention. The pendants have an easy to wear magnetic clasp and look as good on a man as they do on a woman.

About

Turning lemons into the sweetest lemonade!

Ann-Made soda can tab jewelry had its early beginnings in 2007. At the time, I was a special ed art teacher in NJ. I wanted to create a unique lesson plan for my students using soda can tabs . I didn't just want to use the tabs. I wanted to raise the bar and make the end product as beautiful as possible. Most of my students spent much of their after-school hours on the streets. Always in search of projects that combined awareness of their environment and creative-problem solving, I thought this would be the perfect jewelry unit to present to them. Not! Most of my lesson plans were perfectly matched to their needs but this one proved just too frustrating. On to another project!

When the other teachers and my two daughters saw the jewelry samples I had created, they flipped over them. I decided to collect as many tabs as I could (harder than you think if you don't drink canned drinks) and made many gifts. One of the teachers suggested I approach a local gallery that had recently opened. I did and yes, they were eager to give the jewelry a try. My bracelets flew out of their shop. Yay!

While still teaching, I started signing up for art festivals. I exhibited at about 80 of them over the next couple of years. Hard work but so exhilarating talking to all of those who stopped by my booth about my jewelry, the environment and what we could all be doing to make a difference.

So many wonderful things started happening for Ann-Made. While exhibiting at a festival in New York City, a producer for Fox Business TV stopped by the booth. She invited me on the show to have my small business critiqued by Jordan Zimmerman, CEO of a Florida ad agency. The Asbury Park Press ran an article on Ann-Made and from that my jewelry was picked up by 5 Whole Foods Markets in the Northeast. My jewelry was part of an Emmy Celebrity gift bag and Jane Goodall's "Day of Peace" Festival celebrity gift bag. "First Magazine for Women", a national magazine, ran a full-page feature on what I was doing. Life was good! Doing what I loved, teaching and having a cool business on the side.

As the sales grew, I started formulating ideas about what I wanted my business to be about. I knew it needed to follow my code of ethics about people, the environment and our community. I applied for, and was honored to receive the gold-level Green America Seal of Approval. I began working with Ronald McDonald House to purchase the tabs I needed, choosing to pay substantially more than they were receiving from the aluminum recycler. This helped them do even more of the great work they do for so many families. I designed the packaging using my skills as a former art director, printing on 100% recycled paper and using clean, but used cardboard. I started training assistants so they could work out of their homes, reducing commuting and day care costs. I started donating to social and environmental causes. Yes, my business was really starting to mature in the ways I wanted it to.

Okay. So here comes the part about the lemons and the sweet lemonade...

I loved, I mean really loved teaching. I came into it later in life. With all of the skills I had attained over my life so far as an art director and a parent, it was the perfect job at the perfect time in my life.

One February morning in 2009, my principal called me into her office. I thought she was about to commend me for the news I had gotten that morning that a grant I had applied for had been awarded to the school. Not even close. She told me she was sorry to say that the school had decided they needed more administrative staff and the art department was going. After 6 years of teaching, tons of recognition for what I had achieved with these troubled teens, tenure and a contract, I was relieved of my position. No goodbyes to the students, no finishing projects, no thanks for getting us that grant. Four other teachers went that day too. We were all in a daze.

I was more than devastated. I was crushed. This job and my students meant the world to me. Not to mention I had a mortgage to pay and two girls about to start college. I knew Ann-Made had a little traction so I took a deep breath, plunked down a lot of money for me and decided to exhibit my line at the Philadelphia Gift Show to see what the wholesale buyers thought. Holy cow! I was blown away. I added 50 new accounts during the 3 1/2 day show.

Five years and many trade shows later, Ann-Made now has over 400 retail accounts around the country from national park shops to galleries, to zoos and aquariums to nature centers. We've sold over 35,000 pieces of jewelry and the numbers keep climbing. I continue to be the designer and lead but couldn't do it without my awesome assistants, Angela, Melissa and Kathy. My daughters, Lindsay and Jessie, have both been a huge part of the business over the years. I can't thank them all enough!

I miss teaching and my students more than I can say but the lemonade I'm drinking these days couldn't be sweeter!
