Announcement   Annie Smith makes these unique, reversible, layered throw blankets in her native FRENCH-CANADIAN fashion. Each blanket is made up of 5 LAYERS OF FABRIC. One side is patchwork blocks with 5 beautifully coordinated cotton prints. The other side is a solid piece of one of the 5 fabrics trimmed with a striking border to frame both sides of this REVERSIBLE blanket. Those 2 layers are filled with 3 more layers of fabric....NO BATTING. Then she ties the layers together in oodles of spots with color matching embroidery thread. All the seams are DOUBLE-STITCHED to make a very sturdy and durable throw blanket that will fold up nice and flat for easy storage. They are very heavy, snuggly and warm. They are machine wash/dryable right in your home. Please read my " About " page for the fascinating history behind this centuries-old method of blanket making. I include this story with each purchase, so this makes a great gift idea as well.

Super quality and great construction. Will be great as cooler weather near. Quick to ship and easy transaction. This is what Etsy is all about. Love the duck print and really loved reading about the history of these blankets as well. Keep up the great work!

About

What is a Canadian Blanket ?

These unique blankets are handcrafted by Annette Smith of Clifton Springs, NY. Annie, 87, born and raised in Canada, spent her youth helping with her family's logging business. After school ended in early summer, the family moved up into the forests of New Brunswick to harvest trees. They took only the bare necessities with them to the lumber camp. Blankets were not on that list. As cold weather approached they used patches of worn clothing along with potato and grain sacks made empty over the summer, to create a layered blanket. One side consisted of the blocked patches cut from their worn clothing and the other side might have been the old flour sack. Inside was filled with 2 or 3 more layers of any available fabric she could find. The 5 layers were tied together with twine knots, and this blanket gave new life to their old clothing. The Layers are the Magic. This gives you WARMTH THAT BREATHES. This craft is handed down through generations of French Canadian women who worked so hard in fishing and logging settlements to care for their families. Now, it has crossed the border into New York as Annie continues this tradition in a more "fashionable" style and fresh new cottons. Now a proud product of the USA, her blankets have sold across the country and have even been shipped to soldiers in the Middle East.

Today, each reversible blanket consists of 5 LAYERS OF FABRIC. One side is made up of patchwork blocks of 5 complimenting prints. The other side is one big piece of one of those 5 prints. These 2 layers of 100% cotton are then filled with 3 more layers of cotton/poly fabric to add weight and body, giving you a total of 5 layers to keep you warm and coddled. Those 5 layers are trimmed in a great print to frame both sides, then tied throughout with embroidery thread. She uses NO BATTING in these blankets to bunch up and lose shape. At 86 years old, she still assembles and ties the layers together on her hands and knees on the floor just like when she was a young girl. All seams are DOUBLE-STITCHED for durability making this one tough blanket. The blankets are washed, softened, and ironed for you. These blankets are MACHINE WASHER/DRYER SAFE.
