"My appreciation for abstract paintings and sculptures has been around since I can remember. There is something so instinctual for me about abstract art. You are taking away the literal and expected to assess the art with your feelings instead of just your eyes. It's why I love experimenting with new color combinations, textures and lines.

Nature plays the biggest role right now in my art. It's often that I find myself out in nature listening to the birds chirping and the leaves rustling in the wind that a design for a painting will come into my mind. It's as though a snapshot of the moment is captured inside of me and as I paint, I relate back to the moment, the smells in the air, the sounds whistling by, the layers of hues in the scene, to guide my colors and brushstrokes. It's all wrapped up and preserved until I can imitate it on the canvas in front of me."

About

Art inspired by our natural world

First I want to say ‘thank you’ for visiting my online studio and viewing my artwork. I love being in the studio mixing colors and feeling inspired by nature.

The best way for me to explain exactly how I paint is this: I will become deeply inspired by, let’s say as an example, fall trees. The thought won’t leave my head and so I reminiscence. And as I think back on all of the experiences with fall trees, I paint. I put up layers to build up the backgrounds that, to me, begin to form that scene. They are the most important part of the painting for me. The values have to be perfect and the depth needs to be ‘just so’ for it to work. Then I add the colors from my memories where my artistic instinct tells me to put them. These are the brushstrokes of color. As the painting starts to come to life, it feels like the visual impression of the memories in my head. It’s all the best of the colors and feelings of fall trees that I’ve experienced. But it’s abstracted because it’s easier to absorb in the moment when there is nothing literal. But the colors are still fall leaf color so it’s not entirely abstract. There’s just no firm subject. And I like that because it lets your mind wander and get lost in the scene.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Where do you find inspiration?
Inspiration for my paintings is predominately from nature. Often I find that while out on a walk looking down at a collection of flowers or looking up into the sky, a certain color scheme will stand out. I memorize the colors and recreate the scene on my canvas later that day or evening. Every so often sounds inspire me as well.

How can I find out about new paintings?
I update Twitter with the newest pieces available, as well as my works in progress. My blog is also a great place to check for new arrivals at www.CortneyNorth.com
