THE ENVIRONMENT MATTERS TO US!

* Our company is based on a circular economy model, which works hand in hand with nature. We only use none toxic mordants, low temperatures and all our dye and drinking water needs are met by using collected rainwater, filtered for drinking, of course. Once the dye has been extracted from the natural (organic if possible) material, the dye stuff is composted in our wormery. The dye water, once used, is pumped through 3 settlement tanks, several planted gravel and sand filters and 2 further settlement tanks, before being drip fed into an evergreen woodland acting as the final and last biological filter in the chain. We contracted engineers and waste water specialist Ollan Herr to create this filtration system.

** All our packaging ( including stickers) are either made from vegetable starch or recycled paper and are fully compostable and recyclable.

*** Our Wormery is a big part of our business. It not only composts used dye matter, but also excess cardboard & food waste. it takes about 6months for one of our big worm bins to be ready for emptying. The compost is full of nutrients and can be used for planting straight away. Another great by product is 'worm juice'. A lot of liquid is created during the composting stages and it does wonders to your flowers!

How AppleOak started to be...

A few years ago, myself and an artist friend Mia Foley, discovered the endless possibilities of needle-felting. That passion then turned into a lifestyle and we began a collaboration of fibre artists and creators we called 'Woolly Gatherings'. We held workshops ranging from traditional cable knitting to complex and styllized crocheting, all kinds of felting techniques, dying workshops and spinning. We also ran practical workshops like how to read a pattern or use a sewing machine.
Once we had the workshops up and running, we realised that we were finding it really difficult to source the kind of quality yarns and crafting necessities we needed. Everything was poor quality, using man made yarns and chemical dyes. Not only that, the colours were all wrong for the projects we were working on. So I began to look into sourcing more natural fibres, which was so much more difficult than I ever imagined it would be. Even Ireland, which is especially well known for its high quality wool; there just wasn't the market any longer. This was about to change.
With a background in Waldorf and Steiner Schools, I had a deep love of all things natural and the beautiful range of colours found in nature. I began by supplying Woolly Gatherings and soon friends and neighbours were coming to us, cooing over our wools and yarns. No one had seen this kind of quality in years.
The next stage was producing the colour we craved. I set about experimenting with plant dyes, using plants from my own garden and in nature around me. We were blown away by the beauty of these dyes. It became a mission to be able to create beauty and colour for crafters, designers, artists.
My love of colour and my experimentation with plant dyes completely took over my life and my kitchen, and Apple Oaks Fibre Works was born. This natural process of dying fibres is now the heart of what we do. Why Fibre Works? Well because long term, my husband Tristan and I are hoping to grow our own Woad, and we are committing to sourcing more local wool, thus supporting other cottage industries in Ireland, helping to create a real revival in our traditional rural economy. Promoting cottage industry and our ethos and commitment to all things natural is what we are ultimately aiming for. I know by the many positive messages I get, that this is what you want too.
