How April May Bloomed

Chapter 2 - In Full Bloom
July 13, 2017

Since so much has changed since I last updated this, I've decided to create this as chapters of my Etsy shop as a journal of sorts.

It has been slightly over a year since I would say I've been selling regularly. It took many months of many changes to what I offered but eventually, the heat transfer vinyl decal world clicked with me.

I am so grateful for what this shop has taught me and enabled me to do. Last year, in the summer of 2016, I set a goal that my Etsy shop would pay for a trip to Europe. In November, I was able to make that trip happen. Sure the round trip plane ticket was just $320 and I stayed with a friend for most of my six nights there... But still. The extra income that Etsy has enabled me to earn has given me many gifts and I am SO grateful.

The past year has been a whirlwind of change. I moved from my cow and beer filled hometown of Petaluma, CA to a beach town called Pacifica, 15 minutes south of beautiful San Francisco. I'm living in a 200 square foot studio that I've carefully arranged with great mathematical detail, surely a skill I have improved on because of this shop and sorting decal sizes. I began the PERFECT new job in the non-profit fundraising world for an amazing children's hospital about 45 minutes south of where I live (with no traffic!). I traded in my car was 321,000 miles on it for a shiny blue Subaru Impreza, my dream car. Everything has flipped and I am so happy.

Needless to say, it's been quite the ride over the past 16 months and I started making sales right when I boarded the roller-coaster of crazy adulting changes. Two nights ago, on July 11, 2017, I hit my 500th order and tonight I'm just two more away from 600 sales. That means it has been over 500 times now that people have entrusted me to help them create nearly 600 decals for some sort of special vision they had.

I have been honored to make some really incredible decals and I'm so touched to have been a part of it. I've helped someone propose using a custom baby outfit they made. It's so cool to think about the dozens of high school teens who will likely keep their Prom and Homecoming sashes for life with the iron-on decal that I designed. I've made "bride" and "groom" decals that were actually used directly in a wedding ceremony. I've even been given the opportunity to make very important decals that were used to make apparel in memory of loved ones that families wore on vacation together.

From helping other small businesses create their own affordable gear to decking out families and groups with custom designs; it has been such a pleasure to work with the people I have interacted with because of my April May Bloom Etsy shop. I've made tons of new friends and have created so many new connections all around the world, it's amazing the unity I have felt because of opening just one shop on the internet.

I am SO appreciative for the people who encouraged me to explore new crafting outlets, start this shop, and then the COUNTLESS times they encouraged me not to quit. Running your own business is HARD but if you're doing something that makes you happy, it is so worth it. Thank you to everyone who has been so supportive of me through this wavy Etsy roller-coaster and to all the people checking out my shop for the first time!

Love,
April

Chapter One - In the Beginning
March 2016

I like to think that I have always been crafty. I love creating and love helping others create even more. Known for being the babysitter who would bring a bag of art supplies everywhere that I went, I have found it easy to help inspire others to create too. After years of being told I should "do something with my creativity," I decided to open an Etsy shop. Since I am named April and was born in April, naming the shop "April May Bloom" seemed like the perfect name for my blossoming business.

With April May Bloom, I hope to offer the same creative opportunities for others by providing the supplies needed to make your own special projects. With different options like durable vinyl stickers, iron-on decals, and card stock shapes, people can be inspired to create their own gifts, decorations, and more.

Besides creative supplies, April May Bloom offers an assortment of baby related items like body suits and baby shower supplies. Many items are customized and allows people to choose their own colors, shapes, and even fonts!

I am always open to custom requests and new ideas so if you have any questions or thoughts, feel free to send a message.

Thank you so much for checking out April May Bloom!

Frequently asked questions
Are the iron-on decals washable?

Yes! I have been making shirts with the same brand of vinyl for the past year and so far, everything has lasted very well through washing. I don't do special laundry steps and just throw everything all together and wash and dry as normal. As long as the decals are ironed-on securely, they should last in the wash with no problem.

How do you ship your products?

Though my decals are flat and generally lightweight, the USPS requires me to mail them as a parcel in order to get a tracking number on them.

I package all my orders within a clear plastic 9"x12" bag with your invoice, set of instructions, and decals. For first class shipments, I paper clip the decals to a piece of repurposed cardboard in order to protect the decal and to classify the shipment as a parcel. These shipments are placed within another plastic polybag, further protecting the decals from weather.
