About

Stunning Contemporary Ceramics by Catherine Lucktaylor Hand Made in Cornwall

A calmness settles over me as I sit with a fresh piece of cool clay in my hands, each time I remember why I love creating with clay. It brings me peace! A perfect moment of stillness and solitude during my busy life of being a mum to my lively 8 year old son, Leon.

I have always loved working with clay and have a BA Hons in Ceramics. I love to feel the smooth clay yield to my touch as I begin to create my pots and bowls. I use the ancient hand building techniques of pinching and coiling. Larger pieces are built up using long hand rolled coils of clay and the surface smoothed with a metal kidney. I often burnish the outside of the pots once they are almost dry (leatherhard). My favourite 'tool' is a smooth black sea worn pebble I found on my local Cornish beach, Sennen Cove.

I love the excitement and unpredictability of raku firing.
After the first firing to 1000 degrees centigrade, I hand paint glaze onto the ceramics and fire to around 950 degrees in my outdoor Raku kiln with a special gas burner.
I remove the pots from the kiln whilst glowing red hot and plunge into sawdust. The smoke from the sawdust creates beautiful effects on the glazed surface.

I create beautiful objects which exude the magical energy of the wild land, cliff and seascapes of West Cornwall, UK. My signature turquoise glaze really is the colour of the sea in this magical corner of England.

Lucktaylor Ceramics are contemporary statement pieces which I hope will become the heirlooms of the future. Unique items to be treasured forever.

I am lucky enough to live in the far west of Cornwall, England. Surrounded by the sea and stunning cliffscapes, the work I create is imbued with the atmosphere of this beautiful landscape.
